Hi. I was wondering what the "cloud" above the date might be. New at this, and I thought maybe rolled in metal? I tried running my fingernail over the area, and I couldn't feel it, so I don't think it's raised. Thanks for helping!

Looks like a stain of some sort that discolored the copper

Ooooh! And I'm sure there's a huge market for stains, eh? Well, thanks Dave, I haven't found anything valuable yet, but I sure have alot of interesting junk!

You could advertise it as "RARE CLOUD" toning...

And, to the CCF! Where are you located?

I'm in the Catskills, upstate NY. How about you? I pretty much just "roll search", but I love it! It's like finding treasure, to see all the things you can't see with the naked eye. But I'm starting to get an interesting collection of UN error coins, so if anyone needs pics of what NOT to look for in an error, just send 'em my way!

wlh,

I grew up in the town of Frankfort, just outside of Utica until 1984 when I graduated, then moved to central FL and have been here ever since.

I can appreciate your error collecting. It is also my son's collecting preference.

I guess "UN" error is another way of saying PMD?

That was a smart move, Dave, cause it's FREEZING up here! I actually tried to get my kids to go to college down South, so I would have somewhere warm to visit, but they didn't listen very well. One went to Keuka, near Watkins Glen, and the other to Cornell, in Ithaca. Brats, I say! But getting back to the UN error thing, yeah, so far I've found dryer damage, contact marks, and a stain! If that's not exciting, I don't know what is! Well, I'm off to look for more exciting discoveries, take care!

Good luck in your search for error coins. They're out there... it's just a matter of finding them.

P.S. it's about 50 degrees warmer here right now than it is up there

I posted a similar coin and mine is NOT a stain although that is what everybody thought before I posted a better picture. Your coin reminds me of my coin.

MDS308's coin looks like it had dropped acid? LOL But I think that is what removed the area in question. The splash direction looks like it came from the north splashing south.
