I acquired this 1909 VDB from circulation recently, in change from a store. I was just curious if anyone could give some insight into where it may have come from to enter circulation so recently. Maybe someone pulled it from a BU roll? Or it was in a jar for a century before someone finally decided to spend it? You be the judge, I would love to hear what you think.

Really nice find, my guess is that it was pulled from a collection by someone who didn't know what it was worth.

Nice coin, Given that it is so shiny it was probably set aside and for a long time - maybe by someone who didn't really have a collection, but just had it as a curiosity. I think it if was an in album or folder and then the owner dies the heirs would try to sell it, but who knows?

Very nice find. I say it was sitting around. It has a mark on the head.

Great score! Beats the 1964 nickel I got in change yesterday... and the day before... and practically every time I pay cash for anything at any location...

1964 nickel is very common.

Very nice pull from circulation. I would guess MS-61? Maybe others can chime in.

Someone probably ' inherited' a jar of coins and dumped them in a coinstar machine. Or some such, putting it back into circulation.

Or from a stolen collection. My very nice Lincoln Penny collection that I started as a child in the 40's was stolen several years ago in a home break in. I had tubes of most dates and mints too I made the rounds of LCSs looking for quantities of my better dates to no avail. So I wondered then if my coins were just spent and put into circulation. (We suspected young kids from the neighborhood, but had no proof.)

It's always great to come across an old coin and set it aside like we all do. I know that the old coins that I find will always be with me and hopefully remain in the family.

I'm not that great at pinning down the exact numbers, I'm luck if I get the letter grade right. If anyone else has an opinion on grade I'd like to hear it. I know the nick on the forehead is fairly obvious damage.

AU-58 at best from the rub through the mint luster on the bust of Lincoln and on the letters and wheat stalks on the reverse. The hit on the forhead won't affect the value more than the eye appeal of the coin. Anyway you look at it finding an '09 VDB in circulation looking like this has to be quite rare. Congrats on your good fortune, it's a keeper. Ed ANA -M-3175

Very nice indeed and likely made it out of a collection due to nefarious circumstances. Next up would be the inheriting a collection and just spending it.
Regardless, it is now in good hands. :) I would go with AU55. Just too much wear on it to go any higher IMO. Great find!
