Since I started collecting early last year, I've been putting together this set. They are all uncirculated. Today, I finally picked up the last coin - an uncirculated 1970 S Small Date.

I have to say, it was a heck of a lot of fun. So much so, that I'm a little sad that I actually finished. I really enjoyed hunting around for the coins to complete this set. A few here, a few there, finding good deals on ebay. Annoyed the heck out of my coin dealer.

I made a few mistakes here and there, probably paid a bit too much on some, but it was a fantastic learning experience. Given that most of these coins are easily obtainable, my mistakes didn't cost me much so it was a good way to get into coin collecting again.

For me, it really was the journey and not the destination. I would have done some things a little differently, but overall I'm pleased with the collection I put together.

Finishing this set has made me appreciate the road ahead (1909-1958) so much more. I'm really going to savor each hunt for the right coin.

I guess that would be my advice to collectors whom are where I was a year ago:

Enjoy the ride. The end is fun, but the ride is where it's at...

Congratulations!

And your post reflects one of my favorite quotes (although from a fictional character)

Quote:
After a time, you may find that "having" is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as "wanting". It is not logical, but it is often true.

Sad to finish a collection. Once the holes are filled there remains a hole in your soul.

The cure is simple: start another collection!

Armed with the knowledge you have gained, and not badly scared by any mistakes you MAY have made,
you are now in much better shape to delve deeper into the collecting hobby/obsession.

You have the right attitude about collecting: it is the JOURNEY!
Please do not ever lose that spirit.

I love the quote from Spock in Amok Time. Yes, collecting for me is also about the journey, not the destination. It is very fulfilling for me to complete a set, but there is always another one to start. That's why I love this hobby. I can never really be done. I just hit a milestone from time to time.

I just completed the 1909-2012 set with my purchase of the 09S VDB today. I also felt a sadness when I putchased the last coin. But, when the coin dealer asked "What are you going to do now?" it only took a moment to realize the answer..."Upgrade!"
