Been kicking this around for some time....If you were going to spend $250 on a key lincoln (graded) would you buy a 1914d in fine or a 1931s in mid mint state....I dont own a key lincoln.Hey, maybe a 1909s? Opinions Wanted..

First of all, great decision in the Lincoln Cent! Abe is the best. I would purchase the 1909sVDB,if that's what you meant? The only thing is $250.00 is too little of price for one, esp. if slabbed. but if your strictly willed on the $250.00 limit,I would go with the 1909sVDB raw,but be careful, check for a "no problem 1909sVDB! Make sure! Good Luck. -joey

It seems like most of the Lincoln Cent collectors around here gripe about the availability of the '14-D than the SVDB. You can always find a decent SVDB when you need one because it's famous (and overrated), the '14-D is actually tougher.

Yeah Captain,I just checked Cointrackers.com website and you're right! The 14d is actually listed in value over the 1909sVDB. WoW! -joey

What does your Lincoln collection look like? You can get a higher grade 1909-S (NO VDB) or a 1931-S for the $250.00. I personally wouldn't buy a raw, poor condition 1909-S VDB... too many fakes out there. You could find a 1914-D in Fine condition for around the $250.00. What do YOU want to do?

Quote: If you were going to spend $250 on a key lincoln (graded) would you buy a 1914d in fine or a 1931s in mid mint state I already have a 1931-S, but I sill need a 1914-D. Therefore, my choice is obvious.

Thanks Everyone, I'll only buy the keys in slabs from the big three....The 31s is a really lo mintage ,,but from what I hear on the forum,,,The 14d is tough! There are plenty to go around....Guess I'm asking also, of these big three....14d,31s,09s would any one maybe go up in value more than the other? Tough question, I know

I think I'd go for the 1914-D all things considered.

My 14-D is damaged - circulation find, so I eventually want to upgrade - not a priority yet though. But this would be my obvious choice.

Earle42 - if your 14-D is a circulation find, how long have you had it? Damaged or not you only have a cent invested in it!
My key Lincoln dates: 09-S VF, 09-S VDB VG, 14-D VF, 22 plain G, 31-S VF

As popular as this series is, you might also want to cast your gaze upon many of the early branch mint issues. Some of them are downright pricey in upper grades - conditional rarities.

To me the easy answer would be, shop around for the best deal on either the 14D, 09S or 31S. Don't lock yourself into any one coin.
Check around and see what they are selling for, and learn what is a good deal and jump when you know it is a good deal....

w/ GR58. That suggestion sounds like it makes the most sense.

all three choices are winners if those are grades you can live with. I personally would have to go for the 14D then I would be left with just the o9S VDB to complete my set

I just picked up a 31s in au, 14d is much tougher to come by.
Get the 14d. The other key dates are all easier to find.

I feel the 14d is a great idea at the present prices and what you want to spend. Good luck with your decision.
