Can you guys help me out with this? Is this some sort of error on the Jefferson nickel? It looks like there is a band of metal surrounding the rim of this 1962.

Is it a Magician's coin? See if it can be split into two halves with a hollowed out inside.

It's not a mint error and that is a steel ring around the nickel.

It's not a Magicians coin. What's up with a steel ring around it? Any idea how that happened?

I'm thinking it's a Dryer Coin after doing some Googling.

Your coin is encased by a broken steel bezel which can be verified by weighing the coin and/or using a magnet. You can see the attachment point just below STATES and the obverse photo shows rust on the bezel.

I'm on board with biokemist6. There is a bezel ring surrounding this coin. You can see the oxidation from the ring on the obverse image. It is not a trick coin. There would be no point in cutting a coin in half and joining the correct halves back together, unless somebody wanted to make a secret compartment to hide their microfilm .

I don't honestly think it's a bezel. It's WAY too tight to be a bezel, I think. If it's not a Dryer Coin, I'm perplexed.

That's because there is a band of metal around the rim. This is a nickel in a metal bezel.

And this is why a lot of the error/variety experts have stopped posting here on CCF. Someone posts a question, a more than qualified person provides an answer, and the OP still not satisfied.

It looks like a bezel to me. Properly done, bezels *should* be tight.

Why is this tread continuing.

This USA nickel is by photo encased by a steel bezel ... and yet the OP is still disagreeing.

No worries ... let's all move on folks ... seen this train wreck before where newer OP has some difficulty accepting the opinions of the CCF experts.

To the OP
Just take a small file or hacksaw blade to it
and it will cut right off. If you go slow and steady
you will not even scratch the coin underneath.
Then post a pic. of the ring/bezel when off.
