These aren't anything special, just a couple that haven't made it into the safe yet. Decided to play with my camera set up before I tucked them away. I have done no post processing on these at all, just cropped and resized with the tool on this website. Any pointers you guys could give me to make these pop a bit more? What do you think of the background? It's a funny construction paper that looks jet black with the naked eye, but turns purple through the lens. I'm ok with the level of detail on closeups at full res:

They look a little bright to me. The details look good though. Maybe adjusting the color until the paper is closer to black would give a more "natural" look. my 2¢

I have been following the topic "Why your background matters" with great interest. I think the black paper -- which changed colors -- is messing with your coin. with Funny Money -- it looks a little washed out. (I, however, am happy if I can take a photo that is focused. )

They look a little dull and washed out to me and the color looks off. John1

You might have some sort of lens flare going on. Make sure no stray light is hitting the lens and that it's not extremely dusty. Your white balance is probably also off, which is what would create the purple color. You can also correct the contrast in post, but the quality won't be as good.

Quote: It's a funny construction paper that looks jet black with the naked eye, but turns purple through the lens. That's your camera, telling you its' White Balance setting is not what it wants for the lighting you're using. It's not the paper - if what you see is black, what the camera sees is black too. The White Balance setting is telling the camera the wrong thing about the color of the light. Beyond that, you're going to find this a pretty good little camera, judging from what I'm seeing.

Thanks for the tips guys. I took the pics last night, didn't have time to check them on my laptop at home, so I posted them from work. They look awesome on the phone with it's tiny little screen, they looked a little washed out at work but they look really washed out back here at home. Monitors matter a lot too.
No florescent lights, it's a little clamp light with a soft bulb in it. I must be blasting with too much light because the arm isn't very tall. I'll raise the light up a ways and see if I can even it out some. Camera is my Droid Max phone.

I fiddled with my lighting and I'm using the blackest Tshirt I own for a background. This is the overhead track halogens and macro setting camera. This is a much more handsome coin than the Morgans. It's low spots are much darker so it gets a lot more contrast.

Same coin, white printer paper as background, using overhead halogens and my clamplight also. Getting better I think. I can really see the ridges on the bottom of the coin in this pic. I'm not shooting strait on because of my setup blocks the light if I do, but I'm going to monkey with it some more. I think I can see that the top and bottom of the coin are in the same focus, maybe not in the resized pic here, but on the fullsize right from my camera.

Much better but why not use the same coins as test coins? John1

The first image of the 1936 Walker is overexposed, so the second one looks a lot better. If your camera has manual settings, you might try setting the exposure manually with a black background, which should give you the nicest image with the most contrast. However, if you don't have manual settings, using a white background to trick your camera's meter is a good alternative!
