I am sure have seen them. I managed to get my hands on one, not the real famous one but nevertheless it's a double die. The double die is real evident on all letters on the reverse and on the L and B in liberty, the rest of the letters in the word are hard to tell but they're there. the 1972 is also double died and so is the motto. What do you think this would go for in grading? You think it's worth the trouble to send in to grading? Edited by Sleaklight 04/25/2007 9:17 pm

That's a pretty cool cent. Honestly I don't know enough to give you an opinion as to whether it is worth it or not. Sorry.

i would only send it in if the coin was worth at least a few bucks more than what it cost to send it in. this coin is not one of the coins I would send in. it has the very large scratch on the forehead that would make it worth just a bit over a cent if it were a true DDO. could you get a better close up of the date and letters? Gary

Or go to Coppercoins.com and look up the 72 DDO's and see if you come close Gary

Looks to me like that is the die #3 DDO (FS-033.5). According to the CherryPickers Guide There are several minor varieties of the 1972 DD that vary in price from $5-$75 in MS-65 depending on die variety. It also states that die #3 is one of the nicer ones, though. My Guide is somewhat out of date (third edition) so the price range may not be accurate. It's always hard to tell the grade from a photo but that first picture looks like it was taken at Ford's Theater. Is that a gunshot wound or is it just the holder?

If it's die #3 or die #8 it's rather common. I cannot tell what's going on around the eye on that coin, but if it's the coin and not the holder, the coin isn't worth a slab. Maybe $4-$6.

The eye has damage around it, looks like someone used something metal to scrape something off the coin. It wouldn't grade in anyone's holder. It's a damaged coin that would NET grade, and I believe even PCI and ANACS are getting away from NET grading. I wouldn't spend the money on a slab for this one, unfortunately.

I agree. The first thing I see is the ugly scratch on the forehead, and that would sour the deal, right away. Sorry. It could serve as a rreference for comparison, or hole filler, in the meantime, while you seek the next one. Dick
