The linked image from ebay seems to show a star at the tip of the 4th dentile to the left of the 1 in 100. My scanner, even at 9600 DPI doesn't show this. With my glass at home I can see it clearly along with three more. Moving to the left, one is above the dentile at the last bit of the N in UNITED.

Then, very faintly, I see two more to the right of the first under the 1 and first 0. Those are obscured in the linked photo.

The obverse looks like the head of '93 to me. Am I correct?

Should this be sent to a TPG, or is it not worth the cost?

Obviously the coin was plated. Not sure with what. The gouge obscured the last D in Hundred on the edge, but otherwise the edge is perfectly clear.

Not sure what the damage was on the top of the reverse.

REVERSE:

Close-up of the bottom of the reverse, but I think image is not good enough:

Don't think the motto letters are positioned correctly for S-48.

Better photo, I hope.

1794-Large-Cent,-Head-Of-93?-Starred-Reverse?

Just under the 1 in 100 I can see a star and then again near the third denticle to the left.

And then, very faintly, up along the UNITED until the edge was destroyed.

It is not a head of 93 (S-17-20), and it is not a starred reverse (S-48). The last picture gave me the feature I needed, I'd say it it is a S-42 which is a low R-4 coin. Not rare enough to be worth a premium.

I just got a copy of the 1958 version of Penny Whimsy just today and was going to come here and edit my post to say, everything fit 42, except for the stars.

The berries are right (except my example seems to have had one worn off on the left hand side) and the obverse is right with high liberty and the thick curl of hair.

But those stars are definitely there. I wonder if someone was fooling around with the coin knowing about the star variety. Might be the same culprit who plated it.
