Hi All,

I am contemplating on buying tomorrow my first box of nickels, but I really dont know what to look for as far as dates except for the War Nickel. Can someone shed some light on what dates I should look for or am I wasting my time with nickels?

Thank you
John

Are you going to build a set or just search varieties and errors?

Jeffersons are one of the easier sets to complete by date out of circulation. I would just pick a date range starting at the beginning and go for it!

War nickels, 1950D nickel, 1938 D or S and 1939 D or S, or anything that stands out and says keep me due to the condition or toning or whatever you like.

Maybe even a 1955 P as it took me over 20 boxes to find one for my set.

All I need now is a 1938 S and 1939 S.

I keep all pre-1965, all S mints, and all 2009s. I'm not very knowledgeable on errors and varieties. Actually, if anyone knows a good site that lists nickel varieties, I'd appreciate it; I was thinking of getting a box myself soon.

I used to keep everything 1969-S and earlier, but now if it is a 1962 to 1964-D I throw it back. I literally have whole rolls of nothing but those dates. I absolutely keep anything from the 1950s and earlier though, no matter how many of one year I may have. And of course, War Nickels and any really nice looking nickels of any year.

I've had some good luck with nickels lately. I keep anything 50's and earlier, War Nickels, proofs, and I check all 2005's for the speared bison error. I'm new to CRH and there may be more to look for. Good luck!

I keep everything from 1961 and before that has a total mintage of less than 100 million. It takes a little while longer to cross reference the old dates at first, but after a few boxes you start to get to know which older coins had high mintages.
