First time I have seen that comment. Beautiful coin, wonderful cameo. Thanks for sharing.

If there is anyone who knows more about 5 cent silvers than the grader of this coin (and I mean individual, not the company), it's Brian C.... they are his personal collecting babies. I will post this thread on another site for a couple 5 cent guys to comment on, but I would call ICCS and talk to Brian.

Thanks Bill...I appreciate your help here.
Brian of course did label it 'way back when'.. and I'm sure will remember it seeing as I have not seen or heard of others from that period. That doesn't mean that others are not out there as I've been on the QT for a long time.

Wow, great coin. Beautiful fields. I have never heard of a first strike for that era and thought only newer coins could get that type of designation.

Just because he says so does not make it so ..Was he there to see it struck ? As far as I am concerned if you are collector , and you own a grading service You should not grade your owns coins.. WAY to much conflict of interest as you can obviously put what you want... Dont get me wrong its a great coin , but I have seen many many just as nice as this and or nicer not get a grade like that from that place

I wonder how that provenance was established?
Am I seeing an unattributed cameo?
@artdio: I don't think Bill is claiming this was Brian's coin. He is saying Brian's collecting passion is 5c silvers. But, it does bring up the issue of who does grade Brian's personal acquisitions?

Artdio ... I did not mean that Brian graded this coin for himself or as part of his own collection or his own ownership. Brian has one of the finest 5 cent silver collections around and they are his passion, so when he graded this, it (the first strike reference) was something that he personally knew about. Another 5 cent specialist from another site agrees with the comments by ICCS. It's a spectacular coin. In the next few days, it would be nice to see Bob Forbes chime in on this as well.

maybe I jumped the gun thinking it was his , but I would also like to know who grades his stuff... I was told by many who know him personally and they all say he grades his own.. I personally cant attest to the fact of this but I am almost certain he would not let others grade his coins...

Two of the absolute best, conservative and honest graders around used to grade for ICCS ... Ingrid Smith and Bob Armstrong. You couldn't ask for anything better than that.

May be a wrongly attributed Specimen. Looks like it to me.

Now I don't know for certain who at ICCS graded my coins.
Brian did give me all of my coins when I went to pick them up and he made no special reference to any of them at that time or since then. I had him do a lot of my coins. Many were very very ordinary pieces,... and now I have (thanks to you all) the names of a few of his grading experts too.
I have acquired some since then that do need grading too. Maybe PCGS this time and some of my key ICCS too for further discussion and evaluation.
Does "Doug Mullins" out of Seattle mean anything to anyone here.?

Thanks for your vote of confidence Bill,... and I to believe that his expertize and knowledge of Canadian Coins and Canadian 5 cent silvers is hard to beat.
Brian's comments and grading are all over the Greatest collections (like the Norweb Collection etc). He is the go-to person for Canadian 5 cent silvers,... and there may be others too. He has had the opportunity to see and grade the best Canadian pieces that are out there and confide with the other known experts and seeing coins that we could only dream of viewing.

I understand that specimen dies were often put into use for business strikings...
But regardless of current graders expertise / experience...
It's just not possible for anyone to say whether this coin was one of the LAST "specimen" strikes... or one of the FIRST "business" strikes made with this die...
Unless, of course, they were working for the mint 155 years ago and were overseeing the actual striking of this coin... :)

Depending on where the coin came from it is possible to tell if it is a first strike or last strike, No one knows the history of the coin, It could have been from someone who was there at the time it was struck and passed down and was always considered the first strike

I think that there are "some important attributes" on my coin that are not found on any of the many known 5 cent specimens that have moved through the best Canadian collections. That's probably why it gets the "First Strike" label. I'm sure that Brian could add to this discussion............
