Hello everyone, We are looking for any info about this coin as we have not been able to find anything so far online that is the same though we have found similar themed coins which is how we have managed to post here in the ancient Greek and Roman coins section, if you have any questions please ask... however here are the details that we can see. The coin in gold measures roughly 25 millimetres across and a good 2 millimeters thickness On the face side as pictures is quite worn though we can make out what appears to be a capital letter E on the left Helmet with some sort of head dress detail. On the flip side a single person, charioteer holding a set of two reigns leading to two rearing horses. Beneath the horses grounded feet are two letters, possibly part of a longer inscription .. all we can see here is possibly A and and N Check out the pictures, sorry that they are not fabulous but it was the best I could get, any info at all would be lovely as we are interested to know Edited by calascovas 02/28/2013 3:43 pm

Probably a gold casting (looks like 24K) of a silver Roman Republican denarius. The very large loop attached to the 'coin' may in fact be part of the casting sprue. I did similar types of experiments many years ago in a jewelry class which I took. I only made mine uniface though to avoid confusing anyone that they might be 'real'.

Hi Fvris,
Thank you for the info about the coin, its very interesting to know!
Unfortunately, the loop part was added on by a jeweller many moons ago so that it could be worn on a chain.

Looking at photo 2 (which wasn't there when I gave my opinion) only reinforces my view ! You can see where the wax was 'fashioned' and the wax sprue attached to a wax copy of a coin. Not a very expert job either as the reverse shows signs of the craftsman trying to smooth out the excess wax where the attachment was made. To me it shows every indication of having been cast as one piece .... gold solder would be smooth and usually show a difference in color. The ultimate 'proof' lies on the edges of the coin. A small line should be visible where the two halves of the latex mold were pressed together when forming the wax.

Hi there thanks again, if it is a cast it is a cast, would certainly make sense as weve seen no gold ones. I have uploaded some pictures of the sides of the coin for you to see :) Had no idea that there could have been such a thing as a casting sprue - sounds very interesting! We thought it was put on by a jeweller :O Can anyone tell us who it is on the coin?

Well from the side view it does look like it was 'put on' so to speak. But as you can see on the coin the edges were smoothed out where the line would be. Face on obverse is Roma. The personification of the City of Roma. Reverse show some one with wings driving the chariot. Wings mean 'VICTORIA'. She is always hanging out in Rome !

Yes it most certainly does look like it has been smoothed out... I can see small dents too in some places.
Thank you for replying Frivs, it was found in a cave in Menorca so we thought it might be an earlier coin so its nice to know these bits of info.

A strange look to the gold surface. Certainly does not look 24k.
