I just love big bronzes. Both Dupondius and Sestertius. This, my third Sestertius, arrived today. It is worn but handsome and my only other Philip II was a Caesar issue so it was nice to get an AVG of Philip II.

Philip II (A.D. 247 - 249)
AE Sestertius, A.D. 247-249, Rome, 29.5mm, 21.81g, 0°, RIC IV 268c.
Obv: IMP PHILIPPVS AVG. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Rev: PAX AETERNA. Pax standing, head left, with olive branch and scepter; S-C in field.

Not really worn much at all in my opinion. I always consider that if the hairline is visible and the ear is clear ..... then its a VF or a F+ at bare minumum. Reverse is excellent. Interesting color spectrum. Is that from the lighting or is it true. Sort of like Christmas candy. At the 'right' price I would have grabbed it.

FVRIVS, Thanks for the comments. I agree probably VF or aVF. The color is natural. It has taken on a very reddish appearance and also has some attractive verdigris. The color is what really sold me on this coin.

Am I seeing the right picture? The coin that I'm seeing is an AR Antonininus. All the same a very nice coin.

Refresh your browser echizento. The gallery is funny that way. It went into the same slot as my old philip II coin because I renamed the file on that one.

OK I got it now. That's a nice coin with excellent detail and color. I love seeing these large sestertius and wish I had more in my collection.

The sestertii of Philip 11 are are relatively easy to track down, and when you find an example, almost always represent good value for money.
Every collector of Roman coins should have one.
