As odd as this may sound it looks very similar to Greek type coins from Syracuse Sicily Ca. 400-300 B.C. with an octopus on the obverse.

to the community This is a very interesting piece, it's not Roman and doesn't appear tp be Greek either. Given that it was found in the UK I'm thinking ot just might be Celtic. Do you have any history about the area where you found it? Where any Celtic tribes close to the location? This might help pin down it's origin.

This was found in a town called Mansfield, very close to an old reservoir where interestingly enough a small hoard of Roman coins was unearthed when works were being carried out to flatten one of the banks. I have quite a large collection of Celtic stuff and I am pretty sure it's not Celtic. The reason I thought it was Roman is that when you have it in your hand, it is made the same as the later bronze coins, it has the same appearance and weight but just can't seem to find any reference of anything even close. When I first retrieved it I though it was one with the Divas Julius Comet, but once cleaned a little I realised it was nothing like. It's approx 17mm in diameter. I will post more pictures if it helps, the ones I have put on are ok but I have no idea even which way round this goes lol!

My first thoughts were the same as those of BenByfield, but I am now thinking it may be Roman, but perhaps not a coin.

If have have been pictures it might help. It doesn't look like any Roman I've seen not even a provincial. Like Sel said it may not be a coin at all.

Almost certainly a coin. The only thing that comes close I think are the 'cuttlefish' coins from Sicily Lest we forget the Normans set up a Kingdom in Sicily during the Crusades. The possibility of a Norman picking one up and carrying it around until it found its home in Britain should not be considered impossible !

Another possibility, since that region of Britain once had Danish/Viking settlements--it might be a Danish Viking coin. Some of the shapes could look rather Viking, compare to this Viking coin from Denmark on the stamp--it says "Oldest Danish coin". Also, I flipped around the coin--does that look like the prow of a ship?
