I read this link http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis...icleId=26605from my email today. I've never heard of these, other than standard occupation military banknotes, and I'm wondering what these military coins are. Quote: One of Ayala's favorite coins is from U.S. Army Europe ... I worked on liaison with USAREUR in 1984 and 1985 and I never heard of military coins then, though most people knew of my interest in coins. Has anyone got any pictures, please ?

I assume theyre referring to challenge coins which can either be for a unit, a specific job, a war, a job designation ect. I believe other than collecting theyre used to see who has to buy the beer. If someone throws down a coin and everyone has theirs they have to buy, if someone doesn't have one then they have to buy. Other than that its something thats traded among military members for people theyve worked or served with/under

I was presented a few RMO's as "tokens of appreciation" for various things; being at the right place at the right time when the Brass rolls in the theater of operations on a "morale tour", but mostly when signing in to a newly assigned unit, the shirt would "coin" personnel, for other military recognition; knucklebuster, NCO of the Quarter, etc...
One rule of thumb is you don't "buy them" they need to be "presented".
BTW: "Round Metallic Objects" are not always round.

The German Army issued military coins in iron on their eastern front in the First World war.

Thanks to all of you.
I've not seen this use of the word 'coin'.
I would call these items "medallions" unless they have mounting pins in which case they would be badges.

My Dad quite a few of them, but when I asked him about the bar thing, he looked at me, smirked, and said if someone were to try and do that to the soldiers he's met in the military they would be laughed at. He said no one ever tried that on him.

Sadly, I recently found out that the coin thing is being phased out or severely decreased. The way I understand it is they were being given out like candy so of course that really hurt the program.

Pertinax, You can call these anything you'd like but if you're looking to buy one on ebay or at a show you would ask for 'Challenge Coins' not 'Challenge Medallions.' I have been buying and selling these for over 20 years and never knew they were referred to as challenge coins until about two years ago. I had no idea they had a name or a collector base. There were challenge coins that came out after Osama was killed and those first few to hit ebay brought hundreds of dollars. The market got saturated and the price fell.
