As a recent beginner to the arcane art of ancient coin purloin, I would appreciate some help of one of my recently cleaned coins.
can you please tell me if that is an actual mint mark in exergue..it looks like an eyelash !!
I think I can read it as,, Gamma- SIS- eyelash..

?
What would it signify ?

I have seen a few discussions on the meaning of the "rising sun" mint mark and no one seems to have a concrete answer.

My personal opinion (worthless in general, is that it has something to do with the sun god Sol. Paganism was clearly still part of the culture at that time and it may be something as simple as a personal preference of the celator at a particular workshop. The celators might not have had much say as to the reverse design was commisioned to be, but might have had a little freedom to express their own beliefs by adding various symbolic markings, in this case "the rising sun".

All conjecture, no evidence on my part, but it sure feels good to live in the world of fantasy and make believe.

Cheerio, -Kurt

PS. Forgot to add the prevailing thoughts on this subject from some experts. This is borrowed from the Roman coin info section on FORVM. Most scholars seem to think these are series marks.

Series marks. Many mintmarks also include symbols such as dots, a crescent, or a branch, for example. These symbols probably indicate when the coin was struck and who was responsible for the workshop at that time.
