Hi fellas, I have looked at this site many times but never joined till today. My grandmother gave me a coffee can of coins that my grandfather saved during the time that he ran a gas station down in South Carolina in the 40's and 50's. She told me anything that was ''old'' or ''unusual'' he would toss in the ''coin jar'' and forget about. I have been going through his coin jar, and trying to sort them out and identify(Most seem to be foreign coins, 95% Canadian). But I came across this one, which I first thought was a penny. Looking online, I see it is a Civil War Token from W.A. Gildenfennys Stationary in Pittsburgh PA. Most of the other pictures I have seen of this have an Indian Head instead of the Eagle. I was wondering if anyone could help me really identify this token, especially a year and a price range. I would really like to tell my grandmother what exactly this is, and for a good story to tell my kids. This came from his station, so somebody back in the day paid for something in there with this coin. Thank you for any information anyone might have.

It's either 765F-5a or 765-5a1. Is the edge of the coin reeded or plain? 5a is reeded and 5a1 is plain. Both are considered an "R7", so it's a better than average store card.

I hope I'm saying this right, but it is a plain sided coin. The side is smooth and rounded like a regular penny. I am guessing that the reference number that you listed is from the Fuld Book on these tokens? Is there a good site to look up info from this book on the numbers that you gave me? Thank you for replying and for the information. I really appreciate it.

Hi!
I'm not sure if there is an online reference for the Fuld numbers, but I'm currently using the second edition, I don't think the numbers have changed much. For the plain edge, the Fuld number is 765F-5a1. It is a R7, meaning 10-20 believed to exist, and is copper.
As far as value goes, I can't really help you there, I only recently started selling CWTs and store cards, and most of what I sell is in the R1 & R2 range. Hopefully who has more experience will stop in to help you in that regard.

Thank you HippieOutcast. As you can tell, I am new to this. I can't wait to tell my grandmother the rarity of this coin. Someone got a penny's worth of gas or soda back in the day for this. I also found Nazi and Fascist coins, many many wooden tokens and Vegas casino coins in with this. As he wasn't in the War or never went out west, either he took anything the customer had for payment, or was the most lax cashier in filling station history.

Looks like it's time for a new edition, 1975 might be a bit outdated :)

I like the 1975 listing better! Thank you both for your help and information.
