Most people who know me realize that I collect counterfeit coins and have done so for over 50 years. I do not collect US counterfeits except for teaching examples. I am also on the ebay Counterfeit Committee so I get to see a lot of fakes that occur in areas other than World Coins (my specialty). Here is one we got today about an hour ago. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...111022870662It hopefully will come down quickly so here is a picture for when the auction is history. Coin has been badly treated so how can it be proven the coin is a fake? Here is what the seller says about his BIN for $519.99 plus $2.07 postage. Quote:Here is a chance to get a 1955 DDO filler coin for your collection. This used to be a really nice coin until someone's ex decided to get her revenge. So an ex- GOT her revenge. Nice story but I don't by bridges in Brooklyn either. I have submitted my conclusive reasons why this coin is a FAKE. What is wrong? Hint - it is VERY simple. VERY POSITIVE.

Looks to me like a 1999... Also since you mention you are on the ebay committee - did you happen to get this flagged and removed prior to the buyer paying $440 for it? There was discussion in the commemoratives section in regards to this as being a medal and not a classic commemorative as listed. 151004645796

Looks to me like its doubled over/under instead of the way the actual doubling looks

Like someone pounded 1955 in so the lettering is not raised.
(I should know that term but it escapes me at the moment).

I moved this to the 'Modern US Variety and Error Coins' forum. Quote: Like someone pounded 1955 in so the lettering is not raised.
(I should know that term but it escapes me at the moment). Do you mean incuse? The lighting direction indicates to me that the date numerals are raised. As for the tell, I am not sure, so I will patiently wait for the answer!

From the few examples I have seen, the 1's in the date should be side-by-side and not on top of each other like the seller's example.
Just a guess...

It's not a 1999, with damage like that, you would see the zinc showing through.

Is this one of those "supersized" cents? Meaning, it's much larger than an actual cent.

So far no one has hit it. Here is a real one for comparison. As an update - the auction has been removed for a listing violation. This is the same coin in its holder.

Does it have something to do with the shrunken appearance of Liberty and In god we trust?

That story about the ex damaging the coins stinks. If she knew why that coin was valuable then the valuable parts would have been destroyed. And somehow, mysteriously, they survived....
