Hi All,

I am in the market for a 1943 P,D & S in a set or sold individually. Well I go on ebay and search and search and when I found some I liked I asked the seller if they were replated. Well I didnt realize it but I am watching 17 different auctions and asked all 17 sellers (with 99.2 or higher ratings) the replating question. Well buyer beware, I have had 10 sellers answer me and what surprised me was some of the responses. Here is what I got back:

Question: Is the coins replated.

Seller 1 Answer: Not sure, How can I tell if its replated.

Seller 2 Answer: Nope, that shine is normal for a 1943 steel penny.

Remainder of the sellers said either yes or no and 2 others said they ordered those coins they are auctioning from Littleton.

Everyone needs to educate themselves with coins before buying them. Whether it is price or replica's or replating. Thanks to this forum and my 2 inquiring posts on 1943 cents I was able to make the educated decision.

Sorry, I'm not up to speed on this. Are the 1943s replated with Zinc sometimes?

Woa! So as a new collector, would someone mind quickly putting down what replating is in this case? What do I look for in a steel Pennie to make sure its the real McCoy? Thanks!

Zinc-plated steel cents tend to rust quite easily because it was the metal stock sheets and not the blanks that were plated with zinc. This quick and dirty plating method left the edges of the steel cents unplated after the blanks were punched, thus exposing the raw steel. Many steelies are replated with zinc, giving them an unnatural shine, in a bid to make them look "better". Replated cents can usually be identified by the shininess coupled with a lack of luster and fuzzy fine details. In hand, it is much easier to identify when you can look at the edge of the coin to check for raw steel.

As long as John Hutch is looking for it in that grade it's a pretty good deal.
