I have made purchases off some USA auction sites but cost of shipping/duties is not making this a wise choice and would like feedback on members recommendations for Canadian sites other than ebay which I still use.

& hello neighbor! About 80% of the material I purchase these day's comes from icollector.com. The primary and Best auctions for Canadian Coinage are held by:

>C & P Numismatics

>Lower Canada Auctions

>Geoff Bell Auctions

>Charles Moore Auctions

I would add Jeffrey Hoare to the list above and make sure that TCNC doesn't make it on to your list.

Thanks glenzy1 for the icollector site info, looks like a good spot to potentially upgrade a few coins. :)

Hi everyone,

Hope you're all having a good day... :)

In the spirit of full disclosure, I must begin by saying that I am an active seller with ebay store... over past 6 years I've bought & sold literally thousands of coins through ebay...

In my opinion, my recommendation is to be real careful about some of these online auction houses...

In particular the icollector / Canadian Numismatic Company events...

These auctions are second only to Torex online in terms of vastly over-inflated prices paid by buyers...

While you will see a large selection and variety of dates, mostly in ICCS holders... you will find that almost all of the sales get bid up to at least "Trends" prices...

Upon winning one of these auctions you will pay:

18% "Buyers Premium Fee"

13% "Sales Tax" if in Ontario / BC

2% "Fee" if you use a credit card as payment...

Plus of course shipping, with mandatory "insurance" fee...

And, just try facilitating a "return" of item after receiving... read the fine print... seller has no accountability.

In all likelihood your final cost on the average ICCS coin purchased through these type of auctions will end up being around "Trends" value plus 30% on top... :(

Save yourself time and money and stick with ebay...

It's a buyers market out there with lots of nice ICCS items routinely selling for 20% to 40% less than "Trends"... with many items listed on "Buy it Now" listings (where you won't get caught up with "bidding fever"... and you can submit "Make Offer" negotiations to arrive at a price you feel is fair.

No buyers premium, usually no taxes, no "fee" for using credit card via PayPal... and lots of seller accountability (if you stick to buying from sellers with proven track record)... plus the ability to communicate directly with seller for additonal pictures or more info re details of coin.

Take care, and Have a Great Day!

I totally agree with cam93....

I've made only one purchase at auction in the last 15 years.

I placed bids on six items and won all six items at this auction.

They were absentee bids and strangely enough they all mysteriously reached my maximum bid.

Hmmmm...I wonder how that could have happened?

That's only one reason why I tell everyone...."There's no such thing as a true coin auction"

I would agree with Glenzy1 but you pay best prices and bargains are few and far between because of the crowd, especially for the
higher end stuff. Coincurcuit and Sixbid are worth a trawl as is DNW in the UK who I have bought some stunning pieces from. Just saying go where the competition is at least less fierce.

I agree with cam93 too...haven't bought anything in auction for several years, mostly a banknote collector just trying to complete a decimal collection. For some of the higher listed items, I'd just put in the reserve bid and see what happens. There are some coin grades that don't seem to make it on ebay very often or are in PGCS holders which I've learned to avoid.

I can tell you for a fact that, in the Jeffrey Hoare auctions, absentee bids go up 10% of whatever the last bid was (whether absentee or the floor) or the minimum step bid for the auction item/price. With TCNC, it is most probably the max that you put on the absentee card.... I won't even preview their auctions any more.

It really depends what you are looking for... the very finest items, with the nicest eye-appeal often end up on Heritage Auctions. Sometimes, you get into a bidding war, other times, you get a grade rarity at any price... This is one I picked up for a great price, probably 20% of Trends (with buyer's premium), at the 2012 Long Beach Auction:

If you don't have a Heritage account, there are photos of the coin here:

So after shipping and a small customs fee, it was well worth it...

Hey SPP... always gotta' lot of respect for what you have to share...

I guess I should have qualified my comments... they were intended more for the average collector / buyer...

No doubt that for the 1 percenters like you & Glenzy, who are shopping for the stuff the rest of us can't afford, sites like Heritage Auctions are definitely the place to go...

Enjoy the high-class dining man... the rest of us are eatin' at McDonalds... :)

Take care, and Have a Great Evening!

Not necessarily, I paid MS-63 price, for a MS-65 coin with superb surfaces and eye-appeal... most US auctions can be good, if one is patient enough. Canadian auctions tend to have reserve prices set too high, and usually half the items never even sell (they go "to the book")...
