I purchased a few coins with a description: "Details" on them and not sure what this means?

It means that it is a problem coin that has been cleaned, conserved, or altered in some way, but still a genuine coin.

A details coin will not have the same value as the same coin without the " details " designation.

I take it a step further, denco7.

A details grade is what I call a technical grade. It refers to the amount of wear caused
by circulation.
A market grade is what the coin will sell for. A VF coin with a hole in it is still a VF, but damaged.
An XF coin which has been cleaned, etc. is an XF cleaned coin. (scratched, whatever)

macdon, I like the term "details," but only with using my definitions. It can be misleading and cause confusion,
as your post suggests. The question of eye appeal next comes into play. Every person has his or her
standard, and no label will ever change that.

The downside to "details" is that it lumps together a number of reasons for the designation.

huh? details has nothing to do with circulation wear, in fact it is just the opposite.

i just wish they would list the details of the "details".

macdon, would you mind listing exactly what the description was and what kind of slab it is in? I know pcgs provides a code that will refer you to the exact kind of details they ascribe.

If the coin is slabbed by PCGS, you will see a 2 digit number before the " / " This number identifies the problem with the coin. Check http://www.pcgs.com/nogrades.html

I understand that in some cases NGC assigns "details" to mint error coins where the error itself precludes a regular grade.

In very simple terms, if a coin is AU but has a nice big scratch across the face of Lincoln, it would be authenticated by a TPG as AU Details/scratched. Never liked net grading where they downgrade from AU for example to XF. It is what it is, an AU coin that is scratched. Bid or buy accordingly.
