Poll Question
This topic comes up once in awhile in the 100+ page thread on these coins. I thought I would throw it out there as a poll.
Now that several people have seen these coins up close do you feel the extra cost of the "premium" coins are justifiable?
The additional price is significant: $750 for the $10; $375 for the $5.

Haven't seen the PHS coins. But need to correct the voting options:
IMO, the PHS $5 has the best value for 1912 coin, but for 1914 $5 it not so justifiable.

Silveroid, I dont understand your theory about PHS 1912 having the best value as 1915$5 has the lowest mintage and the most premium if you can get a really nice grade

Oh, mine idea was simple, but expressed in confusing way.
What I wanted to say: Here we are compare PHS vs HS, or in other words - worth the PHS coin additional premium.
So, take a look at this: For 1912 $5 the PHS worth it money compares to HS - visible condition difference. But for 1914 HS is good enough.
But you can not mix here years, condition and denomination. If mixed - 1914 HS $5 will give the best return.

I was fortunate enought to obtain one of each...HS and PHS, I feel the best value by far is the PHS! They are a higher quality coin that will sell for more. The $5 1914 HS seems to have settled in on ebay at a sale price of $870- $900 while some of the $5 1914 PHS have sold between $1750 - $2000. Hmmmm tough decision...do I want to make a$300-$400 return for the HS or do I want to make a $750-$1000 return for the PHS? I think the Value is in the PHS provided that those that did purchase one didnt get a lemon! I think if someone did order the HS they instinctively have to justify their HS purchase by saying that it was a better value. Just human nature and Just my opinion.

Just out of curiousity...what is the percentage ratio on Hand Select vs PHS that were offered for sale? Is it about the same as the percentage for this poll? Just food for thought.

I do agree with darryl comment; however, the catch is in not "get a lemon" (ie: as long as the PHS are in MS63 and higher). However, from the risk-reward point of view: the 1914 HS has the lowest risk than the 1914 PHS but lower reward at the same time. Time will tell if every PHS are in better condition than HS. The most advantage are those bought at CP (physically & visually inspecting the coin before buying).
Over all, the $5 1914 coins (HS & PHS) are the most rewarding with the lowest risk of all the gold coins, of all class (except the very few 1912s).
