I originally bought a 2008 PF69 $50 gold buffalo a couple years ago for $1,750. I love the coin! Anyways, I was looking it up on ebay and saw it going for well over $3K for the same year and grade. I was curious if it had actually gone up in value that much, or the ebay prices are unrealistic. I asked a local shop for an offer and they gave me $20 above the spot price of gold, which I thought was pretty lame

Welcome! Are you looking at things for sale, or items that have actually sold?

For sale coins only. Is there a way to look at sold coins? Most are buy it now with no offers, so I can't judge if people would actually pay that price. Not sure how to look up its official value either.

Might want to have this moved to the Modern US Coin forum...

Use the completed auctions on ebay to see the ones that sold. One sold for 3k about a month ago and another had a list price of 3700 that sold when a best offer was accepted

I suspect that most we buy gold places, whether it be the cheesy place in the strip mall with the high school drop out spinning the sign outside, or the traditional coin shop, can't survive on a business model where they pay fair market value for your collectables. You should tske their offer of spot plus $20 as a compliment, as they probably offer well under spot for non collectable gold. You may do better listing on ebay.

This was a recommended shop, so I figured they'd offer something decent. But $1,600 for a coin that is retailing for $3K just seems greedy to me. That's almost a 100% return for their investment while I'd lose money in the process. I'll probably put it up on ebay if I decide to sell it.

Quote: This was a recommended shop, so I figured they'd offer something decent. Shops will almost always offer you less than you would get for ebay and sometimes far less. Different shops deal in different things and have different customers for what they look for. While that coin has a premium on ebay to that shop they probably viewed it as nothing more than a gold bullion coin

Hi, the 2008 has the lowest mintage of the series, thus is commanding the premium it you see on ebay. The 2012 seems like it will have the second lowest mintage of the series, and prices shot up once it was announced it was a sell out at the mint. DONT SELL for spot plus a small premium on this coin. Spot+$20 seems low to me but if it makes you feel any better I'll give you spot+$30. I am assuming it is certified by either PCGS or NGC. ebay would probably net you the most money if you need to sell. The last PR-69 DCAM sold on Heritage for $2820 about 6 months ago and PR-70 DCAM usually sell for around $4000.
