This idea was originally going to be, the "Famous Dogs Half Dollar Coin Act" But with the 40th anniversary of the Kennedy half, I would like to see a small series of four different Kennedy halves over four years or so.

So, anyway, as a lover of dogs (especially Red Foxes which are a species of wild dog) I proposed this idea to my two Senators:

-----------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE

This Act may be cited as the "Famous Dogs $2 Coin Act"

SEC 2. DESIGN AND ISSUANCE OF BIMETALLIC $2 COINS FEATURING FAMOUS DOGS OF U.S. HISTORY

(a) Notwithstanding the Authority of the Secretary of the Treasury under the 8th undesignated paragraph of section 16 of the Federal Reserve Act, beginning in 2014, coins in the denomination of $2, shall be issued, and have such designs, and shall be in such form and tenor as the Secretary may select in accordance with this section.

(b) These new "Famous Dogs" $2 coins modeled after Canada's bimetallic $2 coin, a silver colored metal ring around a golden colored metal center, and shall be made small enough to work in vending machines and self checkout machines without having to modify the coin changer machines to take larger coins. The Canadian $2 coin shall be the prototype for the Famous Dogs $2 coins. These new $2 coins shall also feature partially reeded sections, and partially smooth sections, just like the Canadian $2 coin, to help the blind denomination the new coin.

(c) The "Famous Dogs $2 Coin Act" shall be a 9 year program that shall feature four new obverses of the $2 coin, honoring four different famous dogs per year, to honor dogs for serving man kind for tens of thousands of years, and shall honor and feature such fallen dogs as, fire, police, rescue, military and sled dogs who served or lost their lives, serving man kind, with Balto being the first to be honored. Each honored dog's name and breed, and the words "In God We Trust" shall be stamped into the obverse of these $2 dollar coins, and shall border around the bottom of the "heads" side of these new coins. If the famous dog being honored is not a purebred "Mixed Breed" shall be stamped on the border of the coin.

(d) The reverse of the new $2 coins shall feature three different designs per every three years of the program. The Gray Wolf shall be featured on the reverse of these new half dollars for the first three years, to respect and honor the wild relatives that these dogs came from. And for wolves being the first dogs to serve man kind. "Gray Wolf" and "Two Dollars" shall be stamped on the bottom of the new coins and border the edge of the "tails" side of these new half dollar coins.

(e) The Coyote shall be featured on the reverse of these new $2 dollar coins for the second three years. This will help honor another wild dog relative that provided fur for clothing, bones for tools and jewelry and such to the Native Americans and were a part of Native American agriculture. "Coyote" and "Two Dollars" shall be stamped into the reverse of these new $2 coins, and shall border the bottom edge of the "tails" side of these new $2 coins.

(f) And the North American Red Fox shall be featured on the reverse of these new $2 coins for the last three years. This will help us honor and respect foxes as a dog relative that, like the Coyote, contributed to the Native Americans, providing fur for clothing, bones for tools, jewelry and such and were a part of Native American agriculture. "North American Red Fox" and "Two Dollars" shall be stamped on the reverse of these new $2 coins and shall border the bottom edge of such coins.

(g) These new $2 coins shall NOT include or feature dogs, that were famous for being in movies/shows/films, or for being a famous celebrity or presidential pet, etc.with the exception of Rin Tin Tin, who actually served as a real life hero war and police dog before becoming a celebrity dog. The "Famous Dogs $2 Coin Act" shall only honor dogs that were true life serving, life saving, real life heroes, with the exception of the wild dog ancestors of the dogs being featured on the reverse of such coins.

SEC 3. PUBLIC AWARENESS PROGRAM

(a) Within a certain time, the general public, vending, self checkout and other coin-op industries shall be made aware of the new Famous Dogs $2 Coins' release date. Vendors and other industries shall be given time to retool their machines to accept the new "Famous Dogs" $2 coins, should they choose to do so. Public educational information materials shall also be provided to educate businesses, cashiers and consumers about the new $2 coins.

SEC 4. CONVERTING TO A PERMANENT DESIGN

After the "Famous Dogs" $2 coin program ends, the "post-Famous Dogs" $2 coin shall keep the same size, shape and compositions as the "Famous Dogs" $2 coins, and shall feature a famous human figure of U.S. history.

SEC 5. DESIGN RELEASE SCHEDULE:

O have been pretty criticized for this idea by a few people on different boards and newsgroups, but maybe I'll get a more positive reaction here. Time will tell. But I think its a very good idea to get a U.S. $2 coin program going, but ONLY if the $1 and $2 bills are withdrawn from circulation. Otherwise we'll just end up with billions in $1 AND $2 coins that the general public does not want to use. Minting $2 coins could really speed up the transition from the $1 bill, to the $1 coin, as well as from the $2 bill to the $2 coin. Because let's face it. $2 bills are going to wear out as much as $1 bills when or if the $1 bill is phased out and the $2 bill takes off in its place, as most public opinion polls have shown it would.

I agree to $2 coins (well, I dont know how it would go because the $1 coin has gone nowhere for precisely no reason) but I dont think famous dogs would be the base of the series. Perhaps a commemorative issue. What made you choose a canine series?

Anyway, why doesn't the US already have 1 and 2 dollar coins widely circulating? Issue the darn $1 coins already and get a shift on with the $2 ones, I say!

I wouldnt compare the situation with a 2 dollar bill to the 1 dollar bill personally. A 2 dollar bill wouldnt have to be replaced because frankly its used less than half dollars. A lot of places think youre handing them fake money if you try and use a 2 dollar bill. I honestly dont know how the 2 dollar bill is still around to be honest.

That said the 2 dollar coin may still face resistance for being used, but unlike the 1 dollar coin it wouldnt be because of a paper alternative

BenByfield,

I chose a canine series, because well, this is going to sound stupid, but although I love just about all dogs, I really want to see the North American Red Fox on a U.S. coin (or even a bill, which ids doubtful, unless they came out with a wildlife/state part bill series, like they did with the quarter dollar coin) I love red fur colored Red Foxes and actually had a pet Red Fox for a while when I was 15 years old, her name was "Vixey" like the one in the Disney movie, "The Fox & the Hound" but I only had her for a year, because I did not research foxes as pets and their needs, and had to give Vixey to a wildlife reserve, as she lived in my bedroom which was a 12 X 23 attic of a typical 1 1/2 story bungalow and she destroyed everything. Peed up the carper, chewed holes in the walls, made dens in my mattress and box spring, bit me at times (not because she was a bad fox, but because I did not know when to say no, if she did not want something done to her and I kept trying to do it anyway) etc. The amazing thing about Vixey, though, was one night, I watched the full movie of "The Secret Garden" with her in my arms, and she did not budge one bit throughout the entire movie, which amazed me beyond words. I am now 32, and have done much research over the years and am now planning to get another Red Fox, and have wanted to get one for about six years now, but every breeder I got involved with, turned weird on me so it didn't work out. Last years the breeder I'm dealing with, their foxes had cancer cells in them, so I have to wait for this year's litters. So anyway, yeah, I want the North American Red Fox on a coin just as badly as Congressman Mike Castle wanted the Statue of Liberty on the $1 coin.

basebal21,

Not true about the $2 bill. Once the $1 bill goes away, many, if not MOST public opinion polls have suggested that, if the $1 bill goes, the American public would turn to the $2 bill as their "paper alternative" to the $1 coin. This is why the $2 bill needs to go in favor of a coin as well. Because, while I can not wait to see the redesigned $2 bill that is coming out in the future, the cost savings of switching to a $1 coin will not be realized as well, if people are still using paper $2 bills, key word "paper" as in, same as using $1 bills and wasting money printing a $2 bill, that is going to circulate as much as the $1 bill does/did.

Ill believe that when I see it. Those same polls also show people being in favor of a 1 dollar coin over bill to save money yet every time a coin has been introduced theyve bombed horribly from a circulating standpoint.

Id honestly be surprised if the average person even knows that we still print 2 dollar bills

i feel like the 1 and 2 dollar bill's fate should be tied together. if the 1 goes then so does the 2.
fox your idea is very well thought out and seems like you are on to something, but I just cant see them going through with it.

Sorry about the "Design Release Schedule" section, where I piy the dog's number, name, occupation, and wild ansestor, how it all bunched together. I hope I'm not confusing anyone with that.

A circulating $2 coin isn't a bad idea, so is a $5 and $10 coin down the road, but no more multiple changing reverses per year, please. The State Quarters were great for the hobby, but the Presidential dollars and now the National Parks quarters are just so much overkill. There is already too much packaged coins offered by the Mint, and adding another denomination with four reverses is way, way overboard. It might be a better sell if it were a yearly changing reverse like the Sac dollar or the Platinum $100 1 oz. proof. Incidentally, "famous dogs" as a theme wouldn't fly in the US, because it's a topical cultural phenomenon and the US has always had political ideals on the forefront of its circulating and commemorative coins communicating an ideal of what America is supposed to be about. As a postage stamp issued by USPS, yes, issuing topical coins is more likely of the Canadians or the Perth Mint, and once that restriction is lifted with US circulating coinage, why not famous US beer brands, historic clowns/circuses, or how about famous buildings? The list could go and on, if you get my meaning, Fox. No disrespect to your interests and obviously you put a great deal of work into the "drafting legislation," but for special interest groups, a commemorative program has always been the answer. Historically, special interest coins are limited to commemoratives and never on the circulating coins, and if yours were to to pass, it would be a first.

Yeah, I'm not really a fan of the dog idea. I think a new coin denomination will be a tough sell to the public, and I just can't see a canine coin design getting anyone beyond collectors and extreme dog lovers interested. I also agree that changing the design so frequently is getting old.

Personally, I think you will have to get $1 coins circulating first, which means getting rid of paper $1 bills. And that appears to be a difficult battle here in the US.

Possibly a good idea except the next thing would be a national protest by Cat owners. Then of course who wouldn't want Horse's on Coins. I know if given a choice my Grand Daughter would say Horses, then Dogs, then Cats, then Cows, etc. At her age animals are nicer than people anyway.
Imagine if our coins all had animals on them. All coins. Why not? And as to the $2 coin. Sure and a $3, $4, all the way up to $100 dollar Coins.
Or what about all our monitary system being paper. No coins at all. Even the $0.01 paper bill?

I would enjoy seeing a $2 coin and even more going away from coins of dead presidents. A wildlife series would be more preferred by me, but this is all conjecture unless we eliminate the dollar bill. Without a circulating dollar coin the "double dollar" would never fly.

Fox,

You mention the 40th anniversary of the Kennedy half, wouldn't it be the 50th next year? Not sure a coin about dogs will ever take off in this country, I just don't see that happening right now.

They can collect Isle of Man Crowns. They put out a different cat breed each year. They are up to around 30 different breeds now.

Because then we'd be Ireland. (Each of their coins has a different animal on it.)

just carl,

There would not have to be a cat or horse or any other animal series, because, how many horses and cats have been known to save people's lives. That is what the Famous Dogs idea is about: Members of an animal species that saved lives. The only reason for the wolf, coyote and fox reverses, was just to keep the Famous Dogs series all solid canine themed, and because they play an important role in Native American agriculture.

Teach,

Yes, the 40th aniversary of the Kennedy half happens next year. Thats why I mentioned it and said I would want the Famous Dogs program on a new $2 coin instead.
