Based on these photos I would have to say AU as well.

I will guess MS-64. The toning looks original with the nice pullaway effect around the date and stars.

I'm not convinced it is cleaned. I'll put it as MS63.

I'm in the AU cleaned camp also, but hopefully I'm wrong!

yeah after re looking at the photos this could be MS63 the surface looks polished or wiped, but since 1881-S are known as luster filled stikes generally, it could be the plastic on the slab reflecting to make it appear so, since the coin is never on the same plane as the camera sensor.

The results.
NGC called it MS63. I thought that, if they were going to go MS, that it may have deserved higher because the cheek is really clean and the fields seem fairly clean. But, from the comments, I'm glad it got past AU details.
Thanks for your opinions!

It was the different angles you took that made me think it could go anywhere from AU to MS, Your last 2 pics of the obverse and the first 2 of the reverse make it look like there was definite wear. And vise versa the others make it look definite MS. I said cleaned because it definitely looks like someone tried to clean the toning off of the coin

I used to use a bubble level (now I use an app on my phone) to make sure my background is level, then my camera is level for best focus across the whole coin. In a pinch newspaper or small print on a paper can be used, to make sure the entire image is in sharp focus evenly. As a good photographer (IMHO) by tilting the coin I can often easily hide a flaw I don't want someone to see. Glad I jumped in at MS63 after supgog's comment.
