First, could I receive confirmation that this is, in fact, a "D." My conclusion, in viewing the close-up, is YES! Second, would said piece qualify for anything better than G-4? Thanks all

It looks as if a D has been soldered on a AG3 1916 Dime. The 1916-D Merc is probably the most counterfeited coin in the world.

but a submission to a TPG would be in order to confirm. Doesn't look right.

Looks like someone played around and messed with the metal.

I am not quite ready to condemn the coin yet. Do you think it would be possible to post clearer pictures of the mintmark?

In an attempt to possibly provide clearer pictures of the mint mark, I altered sharpness, brightness, and contrast in the hope that this may assist in delineating the "D." And to think, my original post was merely looking to confirm it as a "D," rather than potentially a worn "S." It has also been sitting undisturbed in a Whitman book for approximately 45 years!

The D is too large, mis-shapen, and appears soldered in place. I am 99% sure it's an added mintmark. You could submit it to ANACS or take it to a reputable coin dealer to confirm.

Here is my PCGS AG03 for comparison. On second look, it could be just corroded. Send to ANACS.

The reason why I was I was not ready to call it a fake is because the position of the mintmark looks closest to die 2 and even with the blurry pictures the top serif looks like it could be notched which would be correct. Using a ruler, the top part of the D looks to be in line with the bottom of the top bar of the E which is correct for that die pair. What is the rotation of the reverse? If it is Die 2, it should be rotated to 1:00. I would get this coin certified just to confirm or condemn its authenticity. If genuine, the coin will probably grade AG-3.
