I was looking in a book earlier today which gave a high value to dime which are "1942 over 1941" but what does that mean? I don't know much yet about U.S. coins so I wondered if anybody could tell me. I have a nice dime from 1942: is that any good?

The 1942/1 Mercury dime is an overdate variety. The 1 is connected to the left side of the 2.

overdate

A coin struck from a die with a date that has one year punched over a different year. Save a few exceptions, the die overdated is an unused die from a previous year. Sometimes an effort was made to polish away evidence of the previous date. PCGS requires the overdate to be visible to be recognized.
