I think he only meant to say that it was going into his "colonial" collection. In US numismatics, "colonial" is a term very loosely applied, encompassing coins of Britain and other nations that may have seen use in the American colonies, as well as American-made coins minted after the US ceased to be a colony, but before the founding of the US Mint.

If I listed on ebay.com as a colonial I reckon on trebling my money...? The stuff I see on the unaware sites is mind boggling.I hope you didn't pay more than £2.

It may well end up on ebay.Thanks. I always look at the lastest listings for BIN. It has paid off over the years but you have to put the hours in.

I know exactly what you mean. I mainly collect Colonial coins associated with the American Colonies (ones found in the US Red Book). Not too knowledgeable in British Regal issues but I know enough to get by lets say :)

Problem with Colonial coins in my experience is the unaware sites and folks have no idea how to grade and price accordingly.

I've been collecting for over 40 years and have built a huge surplus of pre 1860 copper (back to 1672)My first love is farthings but all copper hits my radar.Mrs Peter wants me to trim my collection... darn nabbit.I'm currently sorting them all but I must have 20 1720 1/4d's.I will pop up a few on very good terms once I have the nr of posts.I will not rip anyone because we are all collectors and the future of this fantastic hobby. I go to coin fairs in the UK and STILL reap great results. However I do know my subject which puts me ahead of most dealers.

You have tapped it on the head.I love the fact that it may of bought a meal/a flagon of ale or more.Who actually spent it? It is nearly 300 years old.WOW.That is what the history is.I love the large Cent US coins I have quite a few and would love to specialise more.I have got a reasonable collection of small cents but I can't be bothered with 1877 etc as a decent one is out of my league.I started collecting small cents in 2005 and worked backwards. The fact I get my coins out and still enjoy them is part of my appreciation.IHC and Large cents are a big part of my appreciation.I also have picked examples of all early US coins(apart from gold).I have tried to get good examples of all US coins but not date runs.Love it.
