Hi everyone,
I picked this up for 0.25 in a junk bin. It's nearly worn flat but I'm a sucker for old copper coins with a ton of history so I grabbed it. You can *barely* see the harp on the right. I thought it was a Hibernia coin initially but Hibernia's arm is resting on her lap, not raised. I can't make out any writing and the other side is completely flat. Does anyone have any ideas about what this coin might once have been? Thanks in advance for your help!

Sorry. I didn't take an obverse because it's completely smooth. It does have some edge lettering on it - I don't know how I missed it. It says "Payable in Dublin or at Raitvmurta." The last word isn't clear and I'm not sure about the i.

You were probably correct in the assumption that it is Hibernia. Likely one of the many Irish tokens of the 18th and early 19th century. Mine tokens or pawn tokens are a couple possibilities.

That's Ballymurtagh! Irish Conder token. Camac Kyan and Camac halfpenny:

And the object to Hibernia's left is a whiskey still!

Wow - thanks philadelphian!! I figured I was wrong about the last word. I googled the "Payable in Dublin or at part" and found a pretty useful page for Groll Coins. He lists an impressive number of tokens but didn't have an image of this one. Thanks for the ID and the information about the whiskey still.

I suspect it isn't a Conder token but from the 1800 to 1820 period. The Conder tokens usually had an inscription around the figure and did not have a defined rim as this one appears to have. I take it back. The 1794 issues of Camac Kyan and Camac did match this piece design (D&H 251 - 267) Problem is none of them is an exact match. None of them have that rounded top to the still that distinctly leans toward the figure, and none of them have those hugely massive shoulders that the head is set between. I suspect this may be an uncataloged contemporary counterfeit.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm new to tokens and their potential counterfeits. Are there any references that you guys would suggest to help with identification and authentication?
