bosox Pillar of the Community United States 1353 Posts	Posted 03/12/2013 10:17 pm There are a few 1899 cents with re-punched last 9's, since that digit was entered into the dies by hand. We included three in the 2011 Charlton catalog. This is the one on page 346. These are a little scarce, but not rare at all, even in mint state. I have seen one in 64 RED and one in 65 RED, along with some lesser mint state examples. The mark on the 8 is interesting. The others I have seen from this die do not have that mark. If it is in relief on the coin, it may be a stray piece of metal that this particular coin was struck through, or it could be a very late stage die chip on the die. Bill in Burl Valued Member 197 Posts	Posted 03/13/2013 12:01 pm I don't have any as nice as yours (I'm a variety hoarder, not a high-grader), but I do have a very extensive collection of XF-AU's. I looked through my albums & piles and found 14 of your specific variety (not with the 8, though) out of the 68 1899's that I had readily available ( there's more hidden in boxes). Like Rob said, I haven't seen an 8 like yours for that date and I watch dates pretty close. None of the 68 1899's that I went through had a similar 8, so this must be a strike anomaly, rather than due to something with the die itself. If it was a chip, I would have thought that one of my 16 would show it. BTW, in addition to the different type/font 9's (that may be just due to a tired punch) there are 5 different type R/P'd 9's for that date that have nice offsets. 1899's are a neat date to gather. It's nice to compare and see the slight differences between them. ....and a big thank you to Bill for doing all of that checking in your vast collection. I've also got quite a few to check now and they would be similar to your lower grade cents too. That tail on the 8 is now not as dramatic as in the first pic. Were we chasing ghosts perhaps..?
