I go to a fairly old high school (for Canada anyway), and I thought it would be a great place to go detecting. I got the go-ahead from the principal to dig anywhere, as long as the school keeps the majority of the finds to display (I get all the post-67 change I can find, which is good enough for me).

So what can I expect to find? The school's been in continuous use for about a hundred years, and the entire place is about half a block (mostly field). Has anyone else detected at a similar place in Canada? What are the odds I'll find even a single wreath-type old coin?

You can expect clad, trash, and some cool piece of school or local history as well. can't really be sure until you dig it. Any silver, gold, platinum, and other precious metals are a great bonus.

I agree with Roscue2. I have hunted many schools, most have been pounded by other detectorists since the 70's. There is still the chance of a good find or two. They never get it all! Good luck.

Dig EVERY signal. Put up with the junk but on a school sight you will be rewarded if you dig everything.

I plan on checking out a local school but I want to take a friend with me to help carry the trash. :)

Finally, the weather's nice so I can start digging. I've only gone over some recent landscaping areas with loose dirt and woodchips, and have dug up 20 pennies (and a dime). The oldest is an American 1963-D. The problem in Canada is that we have nickel and steel coins, so every time I pass over yet another deep iron signal (for now! I'll dig everything eventually!!) I have to wonder if I'm skipping over a toonie or something...
