My local coin shop guy told me the history of the coins that have holes drilled into them. Did people really believe that drilling a whole in coins and nailing them over doorways was good luck?
Here is an image of the coin I bought from him, it was in chest of all random coins. Lots of interesting coins in there. Including some Asian coins, and some really old Canadians and silver dollars. Of course ranging from poor to fair conditions.

Sometimes people are dumb and have nothing better to do.

However the is a history of holes in coins. As far as the good luck aspect I am unfamiliar with that. People throughout history have put holes in coins and sewn them into their clothes for emergencies. Why a 1 Cent piece? Maybe some kid didn't live near any train tracks.

I'm looking at a 1845 Seated dime that has a hole at the top. The back has no visual signs of being a coin. It's just blank metal.

chrycopaul, those are some pretty awesome coins! It's kind of funny, I had an idea to remove everything around the president's head and keep the rim on the new dollar coins.
