Hi Everyone,
At the suggestion of one of the members here, I am posting a list of the dollars that I have in my collection. They were given to me by an aunt when I was a kid and I have been toting them around since then.
Is there anything here that would be a wonderful surprise?
Number of Coins Year Minted ----- ---- ------ 2 1922 (Peace) 5 1921 1 1921 S 1 1901 O 1 1900 O 1 1896 1 1887 O 1 1884 O 5 1883 O 1 1882 S 4 1882 O 1 1881 O 2 1880 O 1 1879
Thank you all in advance.
Sue

If they are in great condition, the value would increase. Also check for overdate 1880-O 8/7 or 80/79 and RPM 1900 O/CC

The first sentence, I understand. The rest of it is cryptic to me. What is an overdate? RPM? Please translate for this newbie.
Thanks, Sue

overdate is when they took an existing die for one year, and stamped it with a different date for re-use. RPM is basically the same thing, they took a die from one mint facility and stamped it with a different mint mark to use at another facility.

When you log-in to http://www.vamworld.com/Morgan+VAMs+By+Date you will need a 15x quality loupe in hand, and on the above link will be listed all the Dates on the left side, followed by the Mint Branches [Philadelphia - San Francisco - Carson City & New Orleans] ~ ( no mint mark on coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint). You can start with your 1879 Morgan by clicking on the "Philadelphia" link to the right side of 1879 and start viewing the VAM photos there, and if your eyes are still working you can continue on with your 1880-o Morgan by clicking on "New Orleans" on the right side of 1880, and so-on. This can be extremely time consuming, and the VAM experts here on CCF have helped me out immensely this past year after I posted high resolution photos on a photobucket account I had set-up for my late Brother-in-laws Morgan dollar collection, and provided the account info so they could access the account any time. With-in 3 or 4 days the people here nailed about 20 VAMs that I then submitted to ANACS. Good Luck @ a from a old coin guy

Thank you all for the warm welcome. So the only ones that might be worth something are the 1880-O and 1900? I still don't know what RPM stands for. Hummm I see this is more complicated than just year, mint, condition. LOL I'll see what I can find out about the VAMs - by the way, what does VAM stand for? I see the concept is pretty straightforward but not sure what the acronym stands for.

RPM = RePunched Mintmark VAM = Morgan dollar varieties were cataloged by Leroy C. Van Allen and A. George Mallis. The term VAM is an acronym for "Van Allen - Mallis."

Thank you. Does VAM make a difference in the sale price of the coin?

Quote:Thank you. Does VAM make a difference in the sale price of the coin? 95% of the time, no. But that 5%, ooo lah lah! I've picked several Morgans and paid "normal" price, i.e. $45 for an XF/AU 1878 7TF and later sold them for $4000. Just last summer I found the third known (now fourth) example of the 1878S VAM 111. In Sept a "details" graded VAM 111 (XF45 Details cleaned) sold for $11,500. The fourth find, an ungraded but probably details coin, sold on ebay for $1600. So far mine is the only one that graded (ANACs XF40).

Yes Sue ... post them right to the thread. Use the search function and enter "posting pictures" to get the tutorial. If you have problems, just ask and we'll guide you through it.
