Would I be giving my age away if I mentioned that when I started collecting, a 1909vdb Cent would retail for $3.00 each in uncirculated condition.
Back then there was no number grading and the grades for uncirculated were listed as; Uncirculated, Choice, A1, Select and Gem, and while there were no line drawn pictures above AU in their book, they do mention the terms used for uncirculated condition.
The grading system was known to thousands of collectors (we are going back over 50 years) was known as the B&D (Brown & Dunn) System, for the Authors of "A Guide To The Grading Of United States coins" by Martin R. Brown and John W. Dunn
[they also note that the new Lincoln Memorial Type Cent grading is based exclusivrly on the obverse.]
