We can be thankful that these coins exist today because people a hundred years ago preferred paper money redeemable in gold,to the gold coins themselves. Legislation was passed then withdrawn to force miners to accept these coins as payment for gold, the miners absolutely refused and demanded payment in paper. Consumers in general at the time did not want gold coins, history had shown them to devalue over time due to wear, they wanted paper money, always worth the five or ten dollars printed thereon.Little did they know.

bit of tracking on the 1914 $5.00 not the premium hand selected off ebay this past week $750.00 and the second one $949.00 may I ask if theres a reasonable mid market level or is that a normal spread thanks in advance dermot
I think the $750 was a "buy it now", which seemed really low to me and even thought about buying it, but the coin was a bit beat up for my liking. I recently sold one for $900 (~MS63).
