Hi members, this is a fascinating coin of history. The city is now named Gdansk, is a northern port of Poland. But before WWI, this port was named Danzig, a German name as it had been occupied by German from the first partition of Poland (1772).

After WWI, it became a free city controlled by an alliance. The coin was minted at this period of time.

My question is where was this coin been minted, Poland or Germany? From the World Coin Catalog, there is a hint that says Warsaw mint (1923-39)opened officially in 1924. This coin is of year 1923. Does this mean it was not minted in Warsaw? So if it was minted in Poland, where would it be? Was there another mint in Poland responsible for the mintage of Danzig coins?
Or this coin was minted in Germany?

Do anyone know the exact mint place of this coin? Tell me please. Thank you.

To elaborate, Danzig was never part of Poland until later. This is the Free City of Danzig, an independent nation.

The coins of Danzig were minted at different places. The first ones, 10 Pf dated 1920, were actually minted in Danzig (at a gun factory). The later pieces were produced in Berlin and Utrecht. Yours (1 Gulden 1923) was minted in Utrecht only.

As for the city name, well, it was not really renamed - the German name was and is Danzig, the Polish name was and is GdaƄsk. What has changed is the name in official government use. The city was part of Poland until about 1800, but had an autonomous status. In other words, the Polish king was the "supreme ruler", but the city would only accept that rule if the autonomy status was not touched. That changed about 200 years ago, when Prussia annexed the area.
