Hi, I am new to the grading community :). So what do you think, how this coin would be graded? Thank you.

Looks like an XF or better to me. The center lines of the leaves would be worn away if it were VF or less. Take a real close look at the date. There are several 1866 re-punched date varieties as well as a double die that also features a RPD. The pick-up point for the DD is the "O" and "D" in God.

Welcome to Coin Community, Cat123. I grade your coin, "I like it!" XF-ish about calls the strict grade, but I really like the overall look and patina of the coin. It came about any wear it has honestly, and the color is the proof.

Thank you for the answers! I think theres no re-punched date or DD. What do you think, how much could I get for this coin? (I am thinking about starting a new collecting domain and so I need some starting money ). Thanks and have a nice day.

I'd be willing to grade it as high as XF. I like the details and the wear, but the apparent reverse strike weakness is a little bit distracting (for me). Without being able to have it in hand I'd personally stop bidding in the higher VF details price range, a hundred bucks give or take a few. It all depends on how fast you want to sell it. You might find someone to give you full XF $, you never know.
Very nice example of the type.

Ok, I have been thinking about it and want to sell the coin. But I do not know, if ebay is the right place for it, because so many slabbed coins are offered there . What do you think? Maybe I will go to a coin dealer, but I afraid that he will not give me the money, the coin is worth :( .

Hello Cat123, I think HABIB's $100 estimate is about right. The weak reverse rim might be a drawback but the stars and bars are actually stronger than what I've seen on most 1866 nickels. The original appearance might make the coin worth more to the right buyer. You could always ask your local dealer for $100 if you think it's a fair price. (First ask him for an offer. It might be more!). It would be interesting to hear how it works out you. Please add another post if you're willing. If the dealer treats you well you can always give him a plug here on the forum!

Hey, Jaobler I like the HABIB acronym As for the coin...you could try it on ebay with a Buy It Now/Best Offer listing if you're not comfortable with what the market would do to you at auction... If you go to a dealer do not let him/her lowball you and don't get emotional about it. If you have a bottom line and the dealer won't meet it, don't sell it and don't walk away mad. Just post 47 more messages here on Coin Community and offer it to the collectors here either to buy or to bid starting at what you determine a fair price/minimum bid would be. Whatever happens, please keep us posted. I would love to hear the story of what happens to your coin. Nickels are one of my faves. Thanks again for sharing your coin!
