My daughters father in law just passed away and his wife just came over with about 40 to 50 coins that her husbands father gave them he was a banker.

Some are 2.5 D Indian Head Gold coins 1900 to 1929

Others are Liberty five dollar gold and ten dollar gold liberty ad Indian gold.

The all seem in very good condition to me the Red Book price varies in value as much as 1000 to 2000 dollars depending on their condition so my advice to her was send them out to NGC to get them all graded.

DID I give her the right advice once graded ten she can sell them one or two at a time on ebay.

What do you experts think?

What an exciting (and potentially overwhelming) gift!

Your advice wasn't necessarily bad, and having the coins graded is waaaaaaaay better than telling her to unload them with a local coin dealer (or pawn shop), but sending all of the coins in to NGC might not be the best idea. A more complete inventory and more information about their condition (like pictures) would be a real help. Lots of people here would love to help further...just not certain that it's going to end up being worth the cost of grading if the market won't bear the price for the condition. Shiny-ness does not necessarily mean that grading is justified as far as a cost-benefit.

Best of luck to her...

Why sell them? Why not keep them and pass them down? I would have loved to had just one coin from my grandfather's collection.

Well they were not given to me my daughter just told her mother in law I have a huge coin collection so they assumed I new more about coins than anyone else they new.

As for grading the 2.5 dollar indians for example run anywhere from $175.00 up to $ 1650 as MS68

I am not expert but allot of them sure look like they would grade MS68 to me.

I will see if I can get a couple from them and scan them for you all to look at and give your opinion as to weather to send them in would send them to ANACS as it looks like they charge allot less per coin.

I will call my daughter and see if I can get some to scan and post here.

That's great if you can get some pics...keep in mind that ANACS may be cheaper, but they are not quite as universally accepted as PCGS and NGC. Another thing to keep in mind is that gold coins do not "tarnish" like coins of other metals, so grading them by eye-appeal is temptingly inaccurate. Indians of that era are very difficult to grade because of the incuse design.

Whatever she decides, I hope you urge her to be patient.

Well I had a fit when I saw they has all these gold coins in one envelope together, needless to say the did not leave here like that I had them well protected they are in no rush that is what I told them this takes time and by waiting they may get thousands more but I also told them they can be worth the gold spot value or depending on how they grade allot.

Some of them looked very good to me we shall see her husband's funeral is Wednesday so will be awhile and I am going on a trip for the month of May leaving Saturday so hope they can wait think they will.

I don't know where you are getting those values/prices but 1)$2.50 Indian Quarter Eagles aren't available in MS68 or MS67 grade. In fact, MS66's and even MS65's and MS64's are quite scarce; 2)Even an MS65 is worth more than the $1650 price you noted for an MS68.

Additionally, if the coins grade in the neighborhood of MS62 or higher, the higher grading fees that you would have to pay to have such coins graded by PCGS or NGC instead of ANACS would likely be more than made up for by the grater liquidity and selling prices that would result.
