I keep going back & forth between ordering the Littleton Coin special of the first 24 Presidential dollars for $24 face value. My LCS has a hard time keeping these in stock, and he told me there are around 300 people on his "call me" list as soon as the new releases come in! I'm afraid demand is only going to go up and prices to follow. I heard of an LCS 80 miles away charging $6.95 each for these. Here locally they're roughly 2x face value. Just curious, how much are you able to purchase the Presidential dollars for in your neck of the woods?

Littleton is the way to go! I have never paid more than face for new coins. Save for my 2013 ASE, but even that was under spot!

Yeah, that's my debacle... Do I just wait a year or two when they sell the "Get the first 28 (or 32, or 36) Presidential dollars at Face Value" special? Or do I pull the trigger now and risk having to buy the rest at some highly inflated prices as more and more collectors hop into hoarding these coins?

At the LCS, they are about 1.5 times face. I think he charges $1.55 or so. I do not collect these but if I did, I think I would get them at my LCS because I could look at them first.

I would wait. Even if they dont have that special again, (im sure they will) eventually they will be old news and you will see them for less than you would pay now. There will always be a deal somewhere.

Unless you are really concerned with quality.. the Littleton ones arent always great. Like stud772 said, you can look at them first locally, but you will pay more for them. Since pres dollars will never be worth a truck load of money, I'm fine with whatever Littleton sends me.
I forgot to add... Littleton is GREAT at making you happy if there is a problem with your order. My last order had 2 of one coin and was missing another so for some reason they sent me a new one of each of those two for free. I wasnt complaining.

I pulled the trigger... worst case, I have these at face value and can always resell them for at least that much.

There's a shoppe (their spelling, not mine) near me that is more of a "we buy gold for cash" place, but they occasionally sell numismatic coins. They have a bin filled with presidentials, sacagaweas and susan b's that they sell for $1.50 apiece. The last time I was there the guy behind the counter told me to buy what I needed because he was going to take them to the bank to get rid of them. I stacked a bunch of 2002-2008 sacs, as well as all the proof sacs, presidents and susie's he had, then the cash in my wallet dried up. Despite being in a bin like that, the proofs were in surprisingly good shape. And while they didn't have every president, not by a long shot, most of those were in real good shape as well.
All that being said, you can't beat face value from Littleton. The only problem is you don't know what mint you're going to get from them for each president. Most are Philly, but you do get some Denver from them also. Don't forget to opt out of their coins on approval program.

I haven't been in a LCS in over 12 years partly due to getting out of collecting for a while and having to work 6 days a week 9 hours a day. When I do have a Saturday off I end up having to run to 4 banks between 9 and noon to pick up boxes of halves and dumping at the others. I have been to at the last 3 coin shows in the last 6 months (which were held on a Sunday the one day I get off ) where most dealers were asking between $3-$4 for any year SAc /President dollars including the ones that were relaesed for circulation. I did pick up a NIFC Sac dollar I needed for $1.25 from a dealer who was selling some coins on consignment for someone and the cosignee had set the prices. I also picked up a few silver coins from the same cosignee for under melt. I guess the cosignee must have been a collector looking to move some stuff vs. adelaerr looking to make a killing.

Ah, still trying to get cheap things from Littleton I see I haven't done this yet myself, so perhaps it's not true. But from my understanding people have purchased multiple promo offers from Littleton over time. Why not get the Presidential dollar deal now, and then try again at a later date? You could get the same presidents but from different mints this way.
