Hello all, my name is Alex and I joined your nice forum in hopes of attaining more information on this relatively large gold coin that was given to me in my youth.

Google came up with nothing as the typical silver Olympic coins flood any search I attempt.

There is very little info on the coin itself aside from the art. It has "AB 22k" very small near the athletes' feet and has an approximate AGW of 1.25 oz.

Anyone?

Alex!

Hopefully, mmorgan22 will stop by to help. I know nothing about Mexican coinage.

I will just say this. It does not resemble solid gold.

It is not a coin. It is a medal most likely commemorating the Olympics in 1968. Looking at the picture I do see a small number on the obverse next to the feet. What does it say?

Welcome to the forum.

It is not the official Olympic coin, that was a 25 peso coin. And it does not have any gov't designation and it is not one of the awarded medals from that Olympics nor is it the official participation medal, which was square.

It looks like a plated privately minted souvenir medal. AB means about in Latin, so I would imagine it is plated in " about " 22k gold.

Thank you for the responses (especially DCH).

Perhaps I should invest in a copy of Mr. Grove's book.

I'll be honest, I've never had the medal thoroughly checked to verify if it is plated or solid. It was part of a gift to me as a child along with other gold coins from S. America. Since the other coins checked out, I just assumed this one would.

Baron was a popular maker of Numismatic medals in different metals. The most common is the Maximilian mini gold coin from 1968.

The originals of the mini coin were copied extensively as were the other Baron issues. Some were re-struck in 8K gold and others in silver that was electroplated.

Specific gravity would work in this case fairly easily to distinguish what the composition is.
