My 5 y/o and I just made a trip to the LCS because she wanted to share her love of coin collecting with her Kindergarten class. We picked up enough Buffalo nickels for her to give one to each classmate and each teacher. We just got done stapling them all into coin flips.

I thought I'd share the cute letter she wrote to read to her class:

~~~~~
Dear Friends,
My daddy and I collect coins together. Sometimes we visit the coin shop. We went to a coin show and I loved it.
I love these Buffalo nickels. They are special because they are very old and they don't make them any more.
I am going to give each of you a Buffalo nickel as a gift because you are my friends and I like you. I hope that you enjoy these Buffalo nickels.
Love,
Ella
~~~~~

I love this kid and her love of the hobby at such a young age.

Cheezy how did you get your kid into collecting? My son is 5 and all he cares about is dinosaurs and angry birds. I take him to the coin shop a couple of times a month but he just wants the pokeman cards they sell. Any tips?

Great story. Sounds like she's hooked on coins. By the time she's twelve she'll be wheeling and dealing like a real pro. LOL!

MrMorgan, a bit of the history is in this thread.

I think one specific event helping her get hooked was a memorable afternoon with her grandpa:

Quote:
Thanks for all the encouragement, everyone! It's really great to have my daughter sharing in the fun. Her most prized coin right now is an old Jefferson nickel she got from my dad, covered with black muck. He told her it was a special "gum nickel" and they joked & laughed about it. We put it in a coin flip and labeled it "Gum Nickel" with the date she got it from her grandpa. It might never be worth more than 5 cents to the market, but I have a feeling that's going to be a pretty special memory keepsake when she's older.
