So I got this 5 gram gold bar. Have some doubts. Do you think this is authentic. The mint is "National Mint of America". Anyone heard of it?

Google up "National Mint of America." Their website is... http://www.nationalmint.com Their products appear to be mostly shiny consumer fad-oriented trinket quality stuff. As for whether your item is authentic -- don't know. Didn't see it in their website, but it might just not be on the menu right now. If you want to buy gold bars, I think you'd be better off and far safer if you stuck with PAMP Suisse, Credit Suisse, RCM, Perth Mint and other known name brands purchased directly from mainstream online bullion dealers. You may save money by going with this kind of thing you bought on ebay, but the odds of your getting ripped off are exponentially greater.

Perth Mint and both Suisse products have been faked, unfortunately. Best bet is to go to a bullion dealer with a top reputation, or direct from a bar maker or pourer, such as Perth Mint. If you do that, keep all of the purchase records as well. Those can be checked against those back at the Perth Mint.

Regrettably, dealing directly with the Perth Mint is prohibitive when you're in the US. They have paperwork demands (I suspect probably govt req's) and the shipping charges are just plain homicidal. In the US, you're better buying Perth Mint products from Provident, APMEX, etc. I think when I deal with Goldmart, Provident, APMEX, SilverTowne, Scottsdale, NWT, etc I'm safe enough from the counterfeits/fakes/forgeries that clutter the market these days. Edit: Silverwolf-- That thing up there is a "National Mint of America" product--not the PAMP Suisse assay card that you're used to seeing.

I did some search and looks like they used to have gold bars earlier. But I think I will stick to PAMP or similar bars in the future, just to be sure.

Now that there is a possibility (however small), of being caught with fake gold bars, we now have to buy from a dealer who has reputation that is unimpeachable, unfortunately. If you live in the 'States, buying from APMEX would be perfectly OK in my opinion, but: Just remember to keep all of the paperwork at least until you sell, at whatever time in the future. I have always done that with my most valuable coins, anyway. Is it possible to buy from suppliers like Johnson Mathey?

@sel691---Your idea about J-M made me curious, so I checked out their website. As I suspected, they're a global-scale industrial giant and trying to buy a few silver bars from them would be like trying to buy a single car from Ford, GM, or Honda. You could get lost in the J-M website and have trouble finding your way back home!
At any rate, I think we're all safe enough when we buy known name brand bars from the big online dealers. I stick with mainstream names from mainstream dealers. I see no need or reason to buy into names like National Mint of America or any of the other shadow zone players, although I haven't been able to find any reviews of National Mint of America.
@lincsus---Have you found out whether that bar is real, solid gold or one of those plated knockoff things yet?

Hi , the image of the lady in your bar is close to the fortune lady in the PAMP design , of course the original design is property of PAMP SUISSE. You can see in the MIGGS link a cheap copy from china, if you zoom the lady in the link you can see the lady have the eyes open and the original not and the right down corner say "COPY" another thing I'm worry about is the paper with the information no look good , I mean bad cut in letters and numbers.. and the last, most of recognized Gold sellers have a serial number in gold bars from 1 gram... I hope this help little more about your question, I'm not an expert , I know there more people with more knowledge here, this is just my simple opinion .. Good luck...

On the bar you posted, the female profile points to the right. On the Alibaba link, she points to the left. Looks a lot like the same artwork, just mirrored.

The bar from the Alibaba site is a different type. It clearly says CREDIT U.S. on this bar, while on the Alibaba link, it says PAMP SUISSE. And at $1-1.7 each, I really hope it's not the same. I sew a few pictures of that bar, mainly on ebay, but I can't seem to find anything else regarding this. Apparently a few random sites are Sold Out of these, so people do buy them. When I google it the mint, it shows up as a business close by to me, in Los Angles, on Hill St. I know that part of town is know as the jewelry district or close to it, but that doesn't confirm anything. I would probably trade it for a better known brand, unless someone else here can confirm this bar is 100% legit.
