Got notification today that a large PM order I placed last Friday with Goldmart had arrived at my P.O. Box. The order consisted of five Mexican 50 Peso gold coins, a 100-ounce J&M silver bar and a roll of 20 Austrian Philharmonic silver coins. Went to the local branch Post Office, got my slip from the box and handed it over at the counter. I knew something was wrong when the guy returned from the back holding the box casually in one hand... The box was ripped open along one side, right through the heavy duty packing tape. The rip is jagged, so it doesn't look life a knife was used, and I can't tell whether it was done by a person or whether the weight of the silver bar caused it to rip open: Anyway, the good news is that the Mexican gold pesos were still in the box. The bad news is that the silver bar and coins were not. The folks at the Post Office were useless. The guy behind the counter said it must have arrived that way and that I should call the main post office. The manager at the main post office said it couldn't have arrived that way, since they would have put a notice with it had it been already damaged. I then called Goldmart directly and explained the situation. I hadn't signed for the box yet and was able to email them pictures of the damage. After discussing it with them (and I am a regular customer, btw), they said they would investigate and take the next steps. The manager said that it might take a couple of weeks, but they will make sure I get my missing PMs at no extra cost to myself. So here's hoping. I'll be disappointed with Goldmart if poor packing was the cause of the problem, but I have to give them credit for standing behind their product (assuming I do actually get the missing silver replaced). One thing is for sure, though -- my next shipment is going UPS!

Barry thanks so much for sharing your story. The photo should convince anyone shipping PM's that they need insurance on their mail! Another great point was that you refused to sign for the package! I bet those USPS employees were all waiting for you to do so!

That is the balls for sure, but my question is why didn't they take the 6 oz of gold?
GL Guy
Now that I look at it if it weren't packed right leaving space for the 100 to move around I can see it breaking through the bottom corner. I bet the bar and coin are sitting in a bin or something at one of the post offices used.

That's what I was wondering and why I think it could have been an accident. Unless they simply grabbed the obvious heavy stuff packed in white and didn't notice the gold packed in corrugated cardboard at the bottom of the box...

What an awful story. I hope it all works out for you Barry. That sure looks suspicious. I've received packages from Goldmart before, and that tape is tough. It sure looks like foul play to me.

While they may have accidentally fallen out, they must have sprung legs and ran from the box.

Quote: my next shipment is going UPS! Sorry for your experience but I'm afraid UPS is worse. FedEx is better than UPS, but even FedEx has delivered my gold to the wrong house once. UPS has twice delivered a package to the wrong house for me.

Looks like the bar broke through to me. The hole is about the size the bar would have been but the more telling part is the tape. The 1 piece is broken in the middle and the other one you can see the strings sticking out of it. If it was cut it would have been clean and the strings wouldnt be exposed.
That stuffs pretty hard to rip just pulling especially with how the 1 piece is only half way ripped. Unless Thor works at your post office it looks like the bar was just to heavy for the tape job. Once it fell out it very well could have been stolen but if someone was actually digging through it theyre very good at opening those things to look like an accident

Yeah, I suppose the safest thing to do is just buy directly in person from a local bullion dealer. Except that it costs more, it's not as convenient, and then I have to worry about somebody following me home. In other news, I just had a moment of panic when I decided to weigh my 50 peso gold coins and they each came in too heavy at 1.45 ounces instead of the expected 1.34 ounces. And then I remembered to set the scale for troy ounces...

I'm no forensic expert, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express once. And to me that doesn't look like an accident.
I hope you get everything worked out without too much of a headache.

Heh. When I talked to the guy at Goldmart, he said he didn't think the tape could rip like that. He said he even tried taping up a box and pulling on it and it wouldn't rip. I suggested he try putting a 100-ounce bar of silver in the box and shaking it vigorously instead to see what happened...

It seems kind of strange that Goldmart would ship a 100oz bar so carelessly. Why was the bar not better wrapped inside the box? Anyway, I hope everything works out for you.
