I start with "V" and end with "V" But I am not a word. Just guess me and I promise you A very nice reward.
What say you kids, you need some clues? OK, I'll play along. A pate. But wait, a tummy great? Now how can you go wrong?
Still in the dark? Well, do not fear, For here's the giveaway: Look at a dime called "Mercury." [Now have a splendid day!]
-------------------------------------------
I hope this contest runs longer than 20 minutes!
50+ posts to play. OR, donate $5 USD to the group. (A splendid idea that I stole.)
Prize ... ok, a silver quarter of my choosing.
Answer plus explanation makes you the winner.
As I am fickle, I'd want to keep this to US people. Others may answer, but no guarantee that I'll send a quarter to your country. Really, it is a question of customs/lost mail.
Questions answered if I feel like answering.

Is it 5? Because the "V" could be the roman numeral for 5.

"V" is the roman numeral for "five." But, is it pertinent to the question, and HOW? "Ruin" a contest? No, just making you folk think a bit.

It was the year MCMXV that a new design for the dime was authorized (the Mercury dime came out the following year) and it was the year MCMXLV when it was replaced.

OK, I'll take a stab at this:
you reffer to the live of Victor David Brenner from the time that his name was first written on paper to the date of his death, which can be rendered in roman numerals as V / V / MCMXXV
Or maybe you only refer to the date of his passing. scratch that, maybe NJBob got it

Am I the winged Phrygian cap which appeared on the pate (head) of the liberty dime (V+V). Tummy great refers to intestinal fortitude that is strength in Liberty which is the liberty cap of the dime or in this case the Phrygian cap.

No, NJ Bob did not 'get' it. However, there is merit in the direction he is going. upstate is making things more complicated than they are. Too early to give a clue, tomorrow!

Ah, what the hey? I'm feeling generous. A major clue lies within this poem:
Pray, do not give up easily. Review the clues thus given. Each one was chosen with great care. Don't think I was not driven
About the need to be precise. Put yourselves into my slippers: Posting a problem to be solved I thought a lot how best to do it.
Oh, I do wander aimlessly! I kid you not, 'tis true: The fun I'm having is wonderful, At least, 'til one steps up,
Letting me know his/her fine mind.
You have all that you need!
(OK, OK - it's not a Shakespearean Sonnet!)

No.
I thought that I mentioned this but I didn't:
Look at the reverse.
Perhaps I'll give another clue at a later date.
