Went into a local shop to buy candy. Handed the clerk two halves. He looked down at them and laughed, but gladly accepted them.

Rest in Peace

This made me smile. I get similar reactions with the prez dollars and some people even say that they're going to buy them and take them home.

No I don't think he took them for a collection. He seems like someone who has something more expensive to collect (if you know what I mean).

I bought a coffee from a tiny cupcake shop and paid with a five. She started making change and apologized but she was out of ones and asked if I wanted quarters or, 'These weird dollar coins'. They were Presidentials so I told her I'd take them all. She thought it was funny but then thought it was cool when I told her my son and I were putting a collection together of all the different presidents. :)

There again it is the cash register slot problem. There is no space for the dollar coins. Same problem with $2 bills.

Get rid of the cent. That will free up a slot

Getting rid of the nickel will free up another.

Yes there is and I like it that they put them in with Quarters. I get one of those baby dollars every once in a while for a Quarter. $2 bills, sometimes $20's and $50's get put under that coin tray in many places.
Not sure what a guy working at a Walgreens means when I had him aa Half Dollar coin and he says, not you again.

Unfortunately, but the time we finally get rid of the cent (which should have been yesterday) and the nickel (which should be in the next few years), the dime will probably be just as insignificant to regular commerce.

I have heard rumblings that our government wants to follow up the elimination of the penny with the elimination of the nickel and quarter, and the addition of 20 cent, 50 cent (returning) and $5 coins.

This would make everything based on the base ten system, IE, 1/10 dollar, 1/5 dollar, etc.

Congrats.

I usually spend $30- $70 a week on gas, groceries, etc but try to limit it to $30 per sotre and if I have to go over I bust out the dollar coins.

I find that most registers use a five slot drawer.
With todays coins/currency that gives us cent, nickel, dime, quarter, and an extra slot
one, five, ten, twenty, and an extra slot.

Now get rid of the cent and the dollar note and you have
nickel, Dime, quarter, and two empty slots
Five, Ten, twenty, and two empty slots

So drawer can now be
Nickel, dime quarter, dollar, and an empty slot
Two, five, ten, Twenty, and an extra slot

But what if you only have a four slot drawer and you need that extra slot for rolls or whatever?

Nickel, Dime, quarter, dollar
Two, five, ten, empty slot and put the twenties under the drawer where you already put fifties and hundreds. Think about it how often do most businesses give out twenties in change? Not often. So having them under the drawer is not a big hardship. And most businesses do regular cash drops of any fifties or hundreds they take in or extra twenties anyway. So the register draw excuse is just that an excuse not a serious impediment. And then only if you use a four slot drawer.
