This thaler arrived in the mail from Germany yesterday! Woo-hoo!

It was minted in 1632 by the Swedish occupation forces in Nuremburg, Germany. The Siege of Nuremburg took place in 1632 during the Thirty Years' War involving Sweden, Saxony and its allies against the Habsburg dynasty, which ruled the Holy Roman Empire, and its allies. Gustavus Aldolphus of Sweden (shown on the thaler) had retreated to Nuremburg with about 150,000 troops. The Imperial Army under Albrecht von Wallenstein, 120,000 strong, laid siege to the city for eleven weeks. The siege ended in a standoff after about 20,000 died on each side from hunger, disease and battle wounds.

The thaler has a small planchet defect at 11h on the reverse, which (as the saying goes) adds to its character.

I really wanna get me some older German coins if I can. Where did you purchase this coin at?

I actually have a Jeton from Nuremberg from the late 1500's I believe. I'll try and take a better picture in a few days if I can.

Awesome coin!

thanks scoutjim99!

graceoutcast, I bought it from Manfred Olding. I have been very pleased with three coins from him. Also I recommend Wolfgang Rittig, Jochen Pater and Georg Wendel. All are on ma-shops.com and will take paypal. Would love to see your jeton.

Wonderful Thaler!

Do all the MA-Shops dealers take PayPal? Do you have to contact them separately or do they have a PayPal checkout? I was looking at a couple things Jochen Pater has listed, but didn't see PayPal (or CC) as a payment option.

Thanks

I am not sure they all take it. There is no paypal checkout. I just place the order and put "Paypal OK?" in the comment box and wait to hear back their instructions. Pater has his own site http://www.muenz-shop.de, which has the same coins as his store on ma-shops.com and I think may have paypal checkout.
