In 1918 the 1 penny was struck at 3 different mints.

Royal Mint....no mintmark

1918-1-Penny-Varieties
Heaton Mint....H mintmark
1918-1-Penny-Varieties
Kings Norton Metal Company....KN mintmark
1918-1-Penny-Varieties

On more circulated coins, the H sometimes gets worn down to the point that it is difficult to make out, too.
