I must say I am actually quite intrigued by those fourpences as I have never seen one up close before...what a strange denomination!

G'day, regarding fourpences, or Groats as they were called in old times:
they were also called Joeys, after Sir Joseph CHAMBERLAIN, who was instrumental in their reintroduction in the Victorian era.
Apparently his motive was thus: the standard cab fare was four pence. So, a gentleman paying a fare had two choices: count out coppers; or hand over a 6d, and wait for change. Neither course was appropriate, so gents tended to hand over 6d and NOT wait for change. Great for cabbies, but. Sir Joseph tired of this, and when he became a politician, the fourpence was reintroduced to general circulation, much to the disappointment of the cabbies.
The maundy fourpence, which has been minted continuously for several centuries, but not generally circulated, had a different reverse.

Welcome peter thomas.

When they did introduce the fourpence again?

And why? is the economy then strong or weak?

Josie, thankyou & G'day,
the Britannia fourpence, shown earlier in this thread, was issued from 1836 to 1855. For some reason, they remained popular in British Guiana, and a further issue with the Jubilee head was made for use there in 1888.
I erred in my earler post: the name of the politician who brought about their introduction was Joseph HUME.
As to the state of the economy in that era, I know little, but apparently these joeys did nothing for the incomes of cab drivers.
