Christina's thread on 'Vickies' inspired me to go shopping. Here's my first UK coin...

That is pretty sweet Oak. I am getting pulled in to British coins more and more myself. Specifically 6p for some reason, they are the size of nickels and I have always had a thing for nickels for some weird reason. I really love these large pennies too though. With Brittania and the shield it is just pretty cool looking. The more of them I see the more I want to start a collection of them.

Very attractive coin.
I have always liked the British large penny.
The good news is that I have a UK Penny collection from 1888 until they stopped minting them.
The bad news is that I haven't been able to find it!!

G'day, that's an excellent example of this coin. 1901 was the year Queen Victoria died. She reigned from 1837. Until 1887, her effigy is what is now called the "Young Head". Although some coins had other effigies: the Bun Head on copper coins; and the Gothic Head on florins (1849~). Some Empire coins had other effigies, but the ones I've seen seem to be variations of the Gothic Head. 1887 was her Jubilee year, and so there was introduced a new effigy, the Jubilee Head. Most denominations that year were produced in both YH and JH; except the florin, in both GH & JH. In 1892, the final effigy was introduced, which is what you have - variously called Old Head, Widow Head, or Veiled Head. For your next UK coin, you might look for a Crown or a Sovereign, with a very British reverse depicting St George slaying a Dragon. Good examples of sovereigns, from common years of QV, KE7, or KG5, can be purchased for only slightly above their bullion value. hmmmm ... that really is a "pretty penny" Peter in Oz
