Was looking up some Peru 8R, came across this on Heritage from back in 2004. Definitely something you don't see often - interesting glimpse at an intermediate stage in production. Sold for $460 at the time incl. BP.
Not sure exactly which Peru 8 Reales issue, though, would have the edge inscription "DIOS PROTEGE AL PERU". Most of the LIBERTAD style 8R have an edge pattern, which I thought was generally stars and ovals on the earlier 1820s pieces and bracket-like thingys on the 1830s and up. The South Peru sun 8R has DIOS PROTEGE EL ESTADO... Maybe this was a proclamation medal of some sort or...?
