Hi, this is the second Kennedy half dollar that I find with an unusual prooflike finish; the other one was a 1964, and this is a 1968D. They just don't look right to me.

I checked on the catalogs and there shouldn't be any Kennedy half dollars minted in Denver between 1964 and 1970 with a prooflike finish. According to the catalogs the proofs were minted in San Francisco; and there isn't even any mention about prooflikes.

Can anyone tell me something about these coins, please?

If it was a 1965, 1966, or 1967 it could have come out of a SMS.

However since it is a 1968 it is either a coin that was one of the very first ones struck with a new die or someone polished it after it left the mint.

Thanks a lot. I think you are right; it was polished. Just looked closely with a lens and just on the border of the legends you can see the two different surfaces.

Is there any quick way to de-polish it? :)
Rest in Peace

You would have to walk around with it in your pocket for a while for it to develop wear evenly on the surfaces.

Yes, I though about putting it with my pocket change every day. I'm doing the same with another polished British florin, and so far it's been 3 years and it's still as shinny as the first day. :D
